Discussion topic:
“I have met many feminists who were not lesbians, but I have never met a single lesbian who was not a feminst.” Rita Mae Brown.
Do you agree or disagree, and why?
-
I disagree, as I’ve met lesbians who were adamant about not being feminists, and since I believe that all labels should be self-identified…
I do think that we queer folk err on the side of politics that are pro-positive life experiences for all, regardless of sex or gender, so you’ll definitely find more people who identify as humanist or feminist… -
I jokingly say that all the world should be feminists because everyone either is a woman, loves a woman or is LGBT and has to deal with the hereonormativity of the patriarchy, which is why lesbians make such good feminists. But that is more entertaining than true.
I agree with Rie really — LGBT people tend to be social libertairans because we…[Read more]

Well since I also know several lesbians who do not identify as feminists I obviously disagree. But I do think it’s interesting to consider where/how lesbianism and feminism intersect for the people that do accept both labels. For me the two are somewhat connected simply because the process of coming out confronted me with all sorts of internalised…[Read more]

Well, growing up in a small town, I had only ever heard the word “feminist” in the same sentence as “crazy lady,” so, for a while, I ignorantly denied being a feminist even though I was a lesbian and secretly thought all the same things as feminists, and then one day I actually READ something and was like “oh, shit, this is a great idea. I was a…[Read more]

One of the big reasons that a lot of women I know don’t identify as feminist, or espouse feminist views or do feminist things, is because they think that men will find them less attractive if they do. So it’s just easier for queer women to be feminist because we don’t care what men think of us in that regard. (Even with us bisexuals, men aren’t…[Read more]

Which is not to say that all men are anti-feminist or find feminists unattractive – just that society is very successful at getting women to think that.
-
Absolutely. I always say feminists have better sex, because consent is sexy. Asking someone “Shall I touch you here…?” “What about here? Can I do this?” is essentially dirty talk. Hot.

Interesting video series I thought I’d share: Anita Sarkeesian, who writes FeministFrequency.com is doing a series for Bitch Magazine called Tropes vs. Women (the three that are up so far are linked at the bottom of the page under “Recent Blog Posts”) and it’s about sexist tropes in pop culture and why they’re important.

I work at a restaurant where they will sometimes have Disney channel on for the owner’s kids. Today I caught a part of a show where a boy said to a female friend of his, something along the lines of, its a good thing I was raised by a woman so this irrational behavior doesn’t stump me.
We have a lot of work to do.-
*sigh* That is so disheartening. Speaking of upsetting things kids say, I’ve become pen pals with my cousin’s 9 year old daughter and in her last letter she wrote about the movies she likes to watch and said something about loving Pixar movies and being excited by adventures like that, but “I guess girls don’t do those things, so I’ll have to be…[Read more]

I saw a Disney movie recently where a boy was forced to participate in his dad’s baseball team, but by chance discovered that he loved to cook, and there were girls on the baseball team and they got told “You’re really one of the guys” and “You throw like a girl” and it all concluded with lots of angst but he chose the cooking competition over the…[Read more]

Somedays I wish that Walt Disney could be reincarnated as a girl to experience the Disney princess phenomenon for himself/herself/theirself.

What’s a good book to start with? I’m seriously underexposed to feminism; the small glimpses I’ve had so far have served to make me furious at the world and the small town in which I live. I feel like I need to learn more. MUCH more. I need some sort of a crash course to take care of all this ignorance; it makes me sheepish.

This list one went round the tumblr-sphere and was well-recieved:
My current favorite 101 title, embarassingly enough, is Kiss My Tiara by Susan Jane Gilman. It’s titled and packaged like many of those anonymous pink 20somethings guide to life books (Who buys those?), but it’s actually a rather…[Read more]

I’d suggest something like She’s a Slut, he’s a stud by Jessica Valenti. It’s aimed at teens I think, so it’s a feminism 101. http://jessicavalenti.com/books/he%E2%80%99s-a-stud-she%E2%80%99s-a-slut/
Reading blogs would also help, I think http://www.thefbomb.org is great because it does short and sweet posts.

When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to Present by Gail Collins… Assuming you’re American. Even if you’re not, it’s still super interesting, maybe just not as relevant to you. And Claire is right, thefbomb is AWESOME. I would also try out Feministing.

These are going on my book list for this summer, when I will have time to educate myself. Thank you all sincerely!

Feminism Is For Everybody by bell hooks is a really good primer for beginners on some of the different forms feminism takes and on the intersections with sexism and other forms of oppression (racism, homophobia, classism, etc.)
Jessica Valenti’s books (Full Frontal Feminism as well as the one Claire recommended, He’s A Stud She’s A Slut) are also…[Read more]
