The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI just picked up Inferno by Eileen Myles. Has anyone read it? I’m pretty excited, it has review blurbs on the back from John Waters and Alison Bechdel.
-
I haven’t read it yet, but Autostraddle did it for the first “Reading a F*cking Book Club,” which seems like a pretty good endorsement to me. I’ve been thinking about bumping it up to next on my reading list.
-
Oh jeez, I should have checked there first! I’m really enjoying it so far, I’m excited to read what the article says when I’m finished.
-
-
I read that for the AS book club, it is so good.

Comics, Anyone? 12 years, 5 months agoWhat the hell is up with this DC Reboot? Because it looks like most or all the newer minority characters are gonna get kicked to the curb in favor of Silver Age white boys. They’ve already wiped out Oracle to bring back Babs’ Batgirl, which is more levels of wrong than I can list.
-
I have no idea myself. From what I an decipher the DC Universe has actually been in an alternate universe and note the true universe. And, the Flash’s long epic, current arc is supposed to fix the time stream in the end, correcting the universe and resetting everything, hence the reboot and Jim Lee re-designing the costumes and all that…[Read more]

Ohio is for AutoStraddlers 12 years, 5 months agoSince I may be in Ohio longer than originally anticipated/wanted, I feel compelled to organize a potential meetup(s). Not sure if anyone is interested but:
Cleveland: June 13th – Lovers is playing at Wilbert’s. (http://www.myspace.com/loverstheband).
Columbus: TBD – someone else can suggest something b/c I’m not from the area but I could use a…[Read more]-
Hello I live in Cincinnati now! Let’s do this. Is anyone here in charge? If not I volunteer to fearlessly [mostly] lead our group.
-
Oh hey, I know where Wilbert’s is! Sounds good to me.
-
This group was created by someone (bunnydot?) but I don’t think they’d mind if you led the Cincy group, Laura. Same goes for any Columbus or even Cleveland volunteers. This is a democracy after all – leaders and ideas are welcome.
I’ll probably swing by Wilbert’s on June 13th to check the awesome music. Never been there before. I’ll check back…[Read more]

I’m in Columbus, and I’d definitely be in for something around Pride if anyone else would like to hang out.
-
Okay! I think we should have a picnic in Eden Park in Cincinnati. Anyone who wants to come can email me @ laura at autostraddle dot com.
-
I’d totally be up for an Eden Park picnic.

I can be at Wilbert’s on June 13. I am pretty excited about this.

I’ve been snowboarding for years now, but just recently got back into longboarding. Are there any other girls who ride out there?
-
I’ve snowboarding since I was around 13
-
I started then too :) What’s your home mountain?
-
Mt. Hood in Oregon.
-
-
-
That was when I started myself :] I’ve only ever gotten to snowboard in California [Tahoe, Mammoth, and Big Bear] and Idaho [Sun Valley – Bald Mountain’s my all time favorite] Do you get any good powder on Mt. Hood?
-
You don’t see powder as often on Hood, deep powder tends to completely flummox me because I’m not used to it
-
Lol, even if you ARE used to it, if you get in too deep there’s not much you can do except flop over :P
The trick is to keep ur weight more towards the back of the board, and bring the nose up and down [more up than down] and you stay on top of it. If you get into a good rhythm, it’s pretty awesome, like you’re riding on clouds :3-
I miss it, I’m living in Florida at the moment, and I can’t take off work very much…sooo my boarding is currently of the wake-type when I can convince my friend who has a boat to go out.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoCurrently I’m reading “Breaking Dawn” because after a year of graduate school I needed something mindless. Next up is “Girls to the Front” to make up for my indiscretions.
-
Girls to the Front is so good, although I feel kind of guilty reading that some of the characterizations were problematic….
-
yeah, after reading it i’m feeling ambivalent towards the riot grrrl movement. i’m always going to love the music, its only ever been tied to me feeling empowered and generally great (grrreat?). a lot of the writing felt apologetic and biased in favor of the movement, which really annoys me. bias is only okay to me if the books is in first-person.…[Read more]
-
If you would like a fuller picture of 90s grrrl politics, may I recommend A Girl’s Guide to Taking Over the World? It’s a zine anthology with a ton of the big names, but the political and social spectrum is much wider than what was well-known in the “mainstream” riot grrrl community. It’s outta print, but cheap used and maybe you can interlibrary…[Read more]

oh cool, thanks! the ‘zines were one of the most interesting parts of ‘girls to the front’ and just a little before my time, i’m totally going to look into this!

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoAccording to her blog, Catherynne Valente’s new book ‘The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making’ debuted at number 8 on the NY Times Best Seller List! It totally deserves it too; it’s awesome. You should totally click on Autostraddle’s Amazon link and buy it!
