Also Working On It 8 years, 3 months agoHi friends, I just figured out how to be here. I’m here.
I have a confession: I’ve had a bad month. In the past month, I’ve gone to the gym once. I normally go three times a week. I got a new tattoo, and I used the healing time as an excuse to not go to the gym. (I think technically you’re not supposed to get a new tattoo all sweaty…) I’ve also…[Read more]

Also Working On It 8 years, 3 months agoI came across a thing called the Functional Movement Screen to minimize chance of injury when taking on a new sport or workout regime. The FMS assesses balance, strength and flexibility of 7 basic types of movements in order to identify instability or lack of mobility, and corrective exercises to fix them.
I’m going to use this to prepare…[Read more]

Also Working On It 8 years, 3 months agoWant to have an AS fitness group on Strava? We can cheer each other on, have virtual events together (like a 1k fun-run/walk or whatever we like!) It’s a an app /website you can upload routes and get mileage/elevation for running/biking/swimming, stuff like that.
-
I don’t currently do any outdoor fitness and so this doesn’t seem relevant for me right now (?) HOWEVER if a few of you wanna go ahead and start an AS group then I’ll put it the details in an upcoming post and encourage people to join y’all.
-
It’s for all type of stuff; doesn’t have to be outdoors or even a distance-related thing, though it does support mileage and route tracking if you want it. You can add like yoga or weight lifting or wtv on it.
-
It’s here! https://www.strava.com/clubs/150735
-
-
I don’t use Fitocracy anymore for various reasons, but I created an Autostraddle group there and would be happy to pass on the reins to anyone else who wants it :)
-
Yes I would – at the moment I just use Strava to track myself but don’t use any of the social settings!
-
So far there’s two of us heh. How about if we get a third, we’ll make a group? For now, feel free to follow me if you like; would be great to have a fellow swimmer who’s also getting back into their workouts to cheer each other on. Massive congratulations to finishing chemo btw. https://www.strava.com/athletes/9995785

-
I followed you on strava. I’ve had the app for awhile but haven’t used it yet
-
Cool. I think that makes three of us on AS using Strava, so I guess I’ll make a group on there. I’ll post that link here too.

Also Working On It 8 years, 3 months agoWhat kinds of activities do you all enjoy?
My faves:
– Swimming (although I haven’t been in the pool for AN EMBARRASSING AMOUNT OF TIME)
– Lifting weights
– Running
– Hiking (trail running for the best of both worlds!)
– Rock climbing
– Obstacle racing (yep, this is a thing)-
YUSSS high-five fellow swimmer. Let’s talk shop about swimming. I’m just getting over a shoulder injury so I’m starting to add back weight training. I have a weight-lifting fitness goal to be able to last an hour at the rock climbing gym heh and new to running b/c those tough mudder type events look way too fun! I do some yoga do.
-
INJURIES ARE THE WORST
Yay swimming shop talk! What are your strokes? I’m a freestyle/backstroke person myself.
-
Back in junior high when i competed i think my best events were back and breast stroke (50-100), and hated freestyle b/c i was so much slower than everyone else, heh. Now that I have more muscle on my frame and just swim for fun, i really like doing I.M.s and freestyle feels a lot better.
Do you have any websites you like for training tips?…[Read more]

Most of my competitive swimming career was actually in synchronized swimming, heh heh heh… but when I swam for distance in high school it was back and free for me all the way! My breaststroke is laughable and I keep hoping my genetic butterfly technique will show up any day now (my granddad briefly held the butterfly world record, true…[Read more]

Ah that’s awesome synchronized swimming! We used to horse around in the pool trying to figure out how they suspended themselves in the water with a leg in the air, NOT EASY.
What is your grandad’s name? That’s amazing he had a fly world record! Thanks for the link; I’m reading and liking. -
@Rey Ron Elenbaas. He held the record for like two weeks right after they changed the kick. It used to be breaststroke kick, but he couldn’t do that kick due to a knee injury, so he’d been practicing with dolphin kick already. So once the kick changed, he smoked everyone! ;)
-
@Rey also, this is how you keep your legs in the air: http://synchroswim.isport.com/synchronized-swimming-guides/support-scull-water-pressure-drills-for-synchronized-swimmers It is definitely not easy!
-
Holy smokes I had no idea that butterfly used to have a frog kick instead of dolphin kick. That blows my mind; going to have to try it. Awesome your grand-dad got a world record like that!
The synch swim methods link is awesome; I love it. I’m gonna try that too lol. Thankfully not too many ppl in the pool early in the morning to see me flounder…[Read more]

I’m also a swimmer!
My favourite sports / activities are hiking, cycling and swimming and I’m also trying to run because I do like it but it hurts my knees a bit.-
Yaaay!
Have you ever considered doing a triathlon? I kind of want to do one, but I need to get on a bike first. (First step: procure a bicycle…)
-
Yes I have actually! It’s actually my fitness goal to do a series of women’s (short) triathlons this (southern hemisphere) summer. They have super mini ones that I think would be perfect for getting into it. The lengths are super doable: the mini tri is a 150m Swim, 5km Cycle and 1.5km Run, and the next level up is 300m Swim, 7km Cycle and 3km Run.
-
Yay moar swimmers! Do you know of a good fb group for swimmers or triathlon-ers? I am currently easing myself into running with the vague idea that I could do a triathlon in a few years.

Also Working On It 8 years, 3 months agoDoes anyone feel passionate about a particular brand of sports/water bottle? I’ve been using a Camelbak Eddy for the past year but am experiencing some issues and ready to explore other options.
-
I got this really great water bottle at Costco. It’s stainless steel, and it has a button you push that opens a spigot and then you can drink from it. Of course, being from Costco, you can only buy them in 2-packs…
Camelbacks have a mold problem in my experience and this water bottle does not have that problem!

Also Working On It 8 years, 3 months agoTomorrow morning is Day 1 of running. I’m following this plan on BreakingMuscle: http://breakingmuscle.com/running/a-week-by-week-guide-to-becoming-a-runner-later-in-life-and-or-safely. I’ll start with the FMS and then do the Day 1 walk/jog. Goal is avoid injury and enjoy running. Any other beginning runners out there? Or other runners want to…[Read more]

I just posted a novel over here. Also great work on making a commitment! Let me know if you have any questions <3
-
Thanks! I read your novel post heh; any particular articles on Runner’s World or other sources that you liked for beginners wrt avoiding injury / choosing a dang shoe? I’m liking a lot of the var online articles about biomechanics that give me a clue about how feet etc are supposed to work while running; pretty cool and helpful.
-
I can’t remember any specific posts – I usually just fall into one of those spirals where I keep clicking on related articles ;)
I really think the best way to get a good shoe is to go to a specialist store and get them to fit you. It’s expensive, yes, but it’s a very good investment.
-
Oh a friend just posted this on Facebook and it seems relevant: http://www.king5.com/story/news/health/get-fit/2015/07/09/finding-the-right-running-shoes/29877961/
