Lesbrarians 12 years, 5 months agoI’m in my fifth year of working in libraries! Always at the bottom of the ladder, though. Right now I’m a page in the Youth Services department of my local public library (where I basically grew up lol). I’d love to get an MLS if it didn’t seem like such a sketchy career move :/

it’s solid once you get into it (in my experience of seven years), and as long as you’re willing to go where the job is (i moved several states away). i also think once you have the degree it’s applicable to so many jobs and in so many types of employment (federal/local/state govt, schools, companies, law firms, hospitals, etc.). information wil…[Read more]

well i have been told i’m doomed to go to library school haha. i might look into it, once i’m over the trauma of undergrad. i know a professional magazine i saw recently had an article with some really depressing stats on recent grads’ job searches. but one of our branch libraries has also had constant turnover since october because of people…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoLadies do you use a Kindle/Nook/Ipad or are you faithful to old-fashioned books?
Are you thinking of upgrading?-
I’ve thought about a Kindle or an iPad, but there’s just something about an actual book that I love. There’s a heft, a smell, a feeling that those bound pages exude. Electronic book readers are light and sterile, and at this point in my life, I can only see myself using one if I were traveling extensively and needed to conserve space/weight. For…[Read more]

I love books (they smell so good!) and I love having the physical copy, but I’m thinking of downloading an ebook reader for my iPod Touch because I’m also kind of a hoarder and my book collection is getting ridiculous.
-
I have a hard time processing information that I read on a screen (even Autostraddle is in one ear, out the other :/ ). So I think e-readers are not for me. Also, I am a design snob and every e-reader I’ve looked at completely trashes the font/page-layout.
-
I have a Kindle, but I still read regular books on occasion because there is no replacing the feel and smell of a book. However, I find the Kindle is great to put queer books on for those of us not yet out of the closet, because you can make it password protected. Also, books tend to only cost about six or seven dollars. So that’s awesome. But I…[Read more]

I spend all day reading pages of writing/comics on a screen, so I’ve stayed true to my zillions of books that fill every nook of my apartment.
-
Even the fancy kindle screens make my eyes hurt after awhile, so I’ve stayed with regular books. Plus, why would I ever give up the satisfaction of closing the last pages after finally finishing a long book?

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoFavourite quotes/lines?
I’d usually go for funny ones, and this one is a little bit cheesy but I kinda like it:
”Before my birth there was infinite time, and after my death , inexhaustable time. I’d never thought of it before: I’d been living luminously between two eternities of darkness.” from My Name Is Red by Orhan Pamuk.
It’s a bit earnest sur…[Read more]-
Having said that, I am lazing in the sunshine reading autostraddle and drinking tea, so it’s not a magic bullet ;)

“I’m up to here with cool, okay? I’m so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month. I’m so hip I have trouble seeing over my pelvis” Hitchhikers Guide
also from Hitchhikers:
“don’t you try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.” Line I quote most, especially to my middle school students.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI just started reading the Thousand and One Nights. Or the first volume, anyway–the title is not an exaggeration!
I’ve read a lot of new fiction but not a lot of good literature. I want to correct that, but I don’t really know where to start. Any suggestions?
-
I’m with you on that – I’m trying to get books I really should have read by now, classics I have managed to miss. Reading Vanity Fair at the moment and it’s pretty funny.
-
ok guys, classic classics or contemporary classics?
-
Hmm. I really would like a little of both, but if we’re sticking to one, then classic classics, please! It’s probably a better starting point.
-
ok well the following is a list of authors of classics, i’ve listed some books i thought were good. and also some which i haven’t read yet (asterisked), but i mean they’re classics. also this is possibly rather anglo/western-centric. god so much pressure i don’t profess to know anything
