from the kslis-listserv, reposted w/o permission (on my own initiative, bc i think it’s important. In regards to conservative members ofour listerv – i will alert the author & remove this post if requested): “It’s unfortunate for the collections you may be maintaining in the future that you think that “fairness” and “balance” mean never questioning or critiquing policies which are inhumane and based on fallacious beliefs. Many left-wing librarians work very hard, in collection development and elsewhere, to self-correct for our beliefs. This can result in collections (and conversations) eventually leaning to the right, in the name of giving space to even the most dreadful ideas and the most inaccurate information. The irony is that no such reciprocity is forthcoming from right-wing members of our profession, who feel that any book–or conversation–which violates their beliefs or demonstrates the faultiness of their ideas is a personal affront which should be eradicated. “

    • We had a token Republic Roman Catholic dad in one of my classes, and he pulled a lot of BUT WHAT ABOUT US and my classmates gentle reminded him that it wasn’t all about him, and that tailoring curriculum and classroom libraries to every parents’ set of morals was a slippery slope to accepting the parents who think interracial marriage is immoral….

      • that’s what i love about working in the public library. it’s not always comfortable, but we serve the entire community. there’s something extremely democratic & patriotic about that, i feel. there are lines that won’t be crossed, however, like the infamous ”flat earth” conundrum from my slis class, birther literature, and eugenics materials that infers any one race is inferior to another. there’s being objective about information, and then there’s refusing to advocate for hate speech/contribute to the miseducation of the public. i believe that information is neither good nor evil, but sometimes, it is simply incorrect.
