Discussion topic:
“I have met many feminists who were not lesbians, but I have never met a single lesbian who was not a feminst.” Rita Mae Brown.
Do you agree or disagree, and why?
-
I disagree, as I’ve met lesbians who were adamant about not being feminists, and since I believe that all labels should be self-identified…
I do think that we queer folk err on the side of politics that are pro-positive life experiences for all, regardless of sex or gender, so you’ll definitely find more people who identify as humanist or feminist… -
I jokingly say that all the world should be feminists because everyone either is a woman, loves a woman or is LGBT and has to deal with the hereonormativity of the patriarchy, which is why lesbians make such good feminists. But that is more entertaining than true.
I agree with Rie really — LGBT people tend to be social libertairans because we…[Read more]

Well since I also know several lesbians who do not identify as feminists I obviously disagree. But I do think it’s interesting to consider where/how lesbianism and feminism intersect for the people that do accept both labels. For me the two are somewhat connected simply because the process of coming out confronted me with all sorts of internalised…[Read more]

Well, growing up in a small town, I had only ever heard the word “feminist” in the same sentence as “crazy lady,” so, for a while, I ignorantly denied being a feminist even though I was a lesbian and secretly thought all the same things as feminists, and then one day I actually READ something and was like “oh, shit, this is a great idea. I was a…[Read more]

One of the big reasons that a lot of women I know don’t identify as feminist, or espouse feminist views or do feminist things, is because they think that men will find them less attractive if they do. So it’s just easier for queer women to be feminist because we don’t care what men think of us in that regard. (Even with us bisexuals, men aren’t…[Read more]

Which is not to say that all men are anti-feminist or find feminists unattractive – just that society is very successful at getting women to think that.
-
Absolutely. I always say feminists have better sex, because consent is sexy. Asking someone “Shall I touch you here…?” “What about here? Can I do this?” is essentially dirty talk. Hot.

Interesting video series I thought I’d share: Anita Sarkeesian, who writes FeministFrequency.com is doing a series for Bitch Magazine called Tropes vs. Women (the three that are up so far are linked at the bottom of the page under “Recent Blog Posts”) and it’s about sexist tropes in pop culture and why they’re important.

Baltimore / D.C. Autostraddlers! 12 years, 5 months agoI <3 baltimore, who's with me?
-
you know, i almost made a trip out there recently but wound up not having the chance. i’ve never been.

I love it, too! I hate when people complain about it. Especially when people say it’s small – um, yeah, we’re actually bigger than Boston and Seattle and Atlanta and a lot of cities that people talk about being “real cities” compared to Baltimore. In fact, we’re bigger than D.C.! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._cities_by_population
-
I will always love Baltimore! There are so many haters, who seem to think that if poverty exists, there’s nothing worthwhile going on. Forget that, this city is more alive than many rich places I’ve been.
-
See, I’m a Detroit native, so I actually know what it actually looks like when a city has such high levels of poverty/crime that it’s chased away a lot of things. So long as you stay in the safer areas, Baltimore is fine. The problem with Detroit is there pretty much are no ”safer areas” within the city anymore, and that’s why it’s lost all it…[Read more]
