Science Fictional 12 years, 5 months agoKay, for me it was Stranger in a Strange Land that did it first, but we all have science fiction books that made us go “HOLY FUCKSHIT” loudly and embarassingly in a public place or around relations, and/or get goosebumps. I miss that, and I’ve exhausted the library around here. Any suggestions?

I don’t know how you feel about short fiction, but Ted Chiang’s collection Story of Your Life and Others is amazing.
-
Oh and also? Anything by Samuel Delany. My favorite is Babel 17. (Bonus: He is super gay and has an amazing beard. The face kind, not the fake wife kind.)
-
One of the earliest stories that really made me go ‘HOLY FUCKSHIT’ was ‘The City and the Stars’, by Arthur C. Clarke. ‘The Gods Themselves’ by Asimov is another that was really important for me. I have a ton of short stories that I could recommend, but I very strongly recommend the following to everyone everywhere unless you’ve already read a…[Read more]

Tanith Lee (gender things) and Ray Bradbury (life things. was brokenhearted when I found out he doesn’t think women should read scifi)

harrison bergeron.. read it and lost my shit.

Oh, this is kind of a weird one, but the book Feed by M.T. Anderson really pretty much blew my mind when I was a teenager.

Science Fictional 12 years, 5 months agoSo what are you all reading right now/what did you just finish/what are you planning to start?
-
I’m reading Kim Harrison’s books about a witch named Rachel. Not so science fictiony, but kinda close.
-
I’m reading Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, not as exotically science-fictiony as his other works but it’s about the future (from 1952) and how automation creates a world underclass. Resonates quite well with modern times, actually….

I’m reading the Hunger Games series, which isn’t half-bad. It’s kind of science fictiony; it’s a dystopian society? So, yeah. There’s technology in it, too, but it does focus on the poverty stricken who don’t reap the benefits of all of this newfangled wonderfulness, and when the main character has to participate in the Games, she’s bewildered.…[Read more]

I JUST finished Hunger Games! Like 3 days ago. It’s not usually my thing, since I’m not usually into the YA stuff, but I thought most of it was pretty cool. I haven’t seen or read Battle Royale, but I’m aware that a lot of the plot may be similar to that movie/book/manga, so I’m pretty curious about that right now.
