Ohhh! Canada 12 years, 1 month agoYou guys, Jack Layton died, this morning. :'(
I feel the need for a Jack Layton memorial open thread. I have feelings I need to get off my chest.-
Jack Layton’s last letter to Canadians
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/08/22/pol-layton-last-letter.htmlHe was a truly great Canadian.

Such a great person. I thought he’d be back by September for sure. RIP Jack. Sad we won’t get to see him as Prime Minster.
-
I was so surprised when I heard that this morning! It is really sad he’ll never be pm, I figured we would have him leading us four years from now

Genderstraddlers 12 years, 2 months agoOkay, so is it wrong of me to suggest that sex and gender can be unrelated concepts? In that a person’s physical sex doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with their gender presentation?
Because I totes wrote that in my last MA essay and the ‘expert’ on gender theory (she is a professor of women’s writing) at my university disagreed. Apparently…[Read more]-
You’re totally right, in my opinion. I get where people tend to think that they’re related, but that’s because they take what has become a societal norm and assume it’s genetic, like a person’s genitalia. What people don’t realize is that if they went to a different society, they’d find things to be completely different.

I agree with you, though I’m not clear if you’re talking about the distinction between sex and gender identity (how you think of yourself/how you define your gender) or between sex and gender expression (how you dress/present yourself publicly). You’re still right in either case, though, neither condition is automatically tied to sex. If the…[Read more]

Well now I’m just wishing I’d argued. But I think I was actually too surprised she thought that to say anything. Sometimes I forget that the rest of the world doesn’t think the way I – and most of AS – do. I get so into this feminist/queer activist internet world that I actually do get surprised when someone has a different opinion. I just thought…[Read more]

It’s okay, I wasn’t trying to diss you for any lack of clarity, I just wanted to make sure I was giving you an answer actually related to what you’d asked.
And I know what you mean about getting used to being around understanding people – sometimes I use a word like “cisgender” in conversation and am honestly puzzled by the blank looks I get in…[Read more]-
Yeah I knew you weren’t being snarky or anything.
It really frustrates me that these issues/terminology aren’t widely known or accepted. I mean, my friends, who are otherwise intelligent and liberal people, have no idea what I’m talking about when I bring up heterosexism or benevolent sexism etc. And it also frustrates me that ‘heterosexism’ gets…[Read more]-
There’s a really excellent explanation of this stuff here: http://tranarchism.com/2010/11/26/not-your-moms-trans-101/ I certainly use it for various arguments I get into!
