TravelStraddle 12 years agoHey all looking for travel advice…
1. Anyone know what the English is like in Italy, Spain or Germany?
2.Best places in Europe that I can get by with English?
3. If you have been to a country that didn’t speak English (or another language that you are fluent in) how did you cope?Just a memo being I’m planning to stay for 3 months so I’ll kind…[Read more]

Hi :) Anyone from *cough* Radelaide??
-
I am :)
-
Oh cool, nice to meet you, fellow Radelaidean :)
-
-
Two new Rads?! What’s the bet we all know a common lesbian?
-
Adelaide – 4 degrees of separation, Lesbians in Adelaide – 1 degree of separation!?!?!
-
-
Radelaide! (don’t hide behind a cough, Radelaide is nothing to be ashamed of… you could be living in Wagga Wagga ; )
-
Haha! I cough because Rads know how rad Radels is (in that familiar, comforting radelicious way), but others may not be aware of the radness ya know?
-
Lovely alliteration there.
So where you from, North, South, West, East?
-
-
-
Anyone heading to or keen to go to the Jezebels next week? I am having no luck convincing anyone to go. My friends… such bad taste in music, le sigh.
-
I’ll be there. Having friends with bad music taste is always disappointing.
-
I would have gone, alas, I’ll be at the KI surf music fest..! It will be a great show – enjoy!
-
How was the show? Anyone planning on going to the BDO?
-
BDO – no one there excites me enough to fork out the money for it. Laneway ftw
-
Yeh, I agree. The line up is below average for next year.
-
BDO hasn’t been very good for a few years now.
Laneway is usually better but I can’t believe Feist isn’t playing Adelaide next year :(-
Playing a side show but it’s quite expensive.
-
Indeed. Why do all the festivals and bands come in Jan-March when I’m still recovering financially from xmas!
Any Adeladies going to Picnic on Sunday?
-
I’ll be going – have you been to much during feast this yr?
-
I mainly go to comedy things. I went to The Comedy Gayla, Lori Bell and the Gay Debate last night. You?
You might spot me at picnic, I’ll be wearing an ultra gay Autostraddle Tshirt probably ha

How much are Feist tickets by themselves? I just got a Laneway-Feist double ticket. Also, “queer-identified” band Austra are going to be there, they’re pretty awesome!
http://www.afterellen.com/people/2011/03/an-interview-with-katie-stelmanis-of-austra?page=0,0
Haven’t been to much Feast unfort and busy on Sunday too :(
-
I’m pretty sure they are about $75 by themselves, how much was the double ticket?
Haven’t heard of Austra, I’ll give them a listen.
Ohnoes how can you be busy on picnic day?!-
The double ticket was $154, not bad considering tickets to Laneway are $115 by themselves. A bit sneaky.. what is it about festivals not having headliners but having side acts (like Kanye) – a money thing I presume? At any rate, I love Feist so much, I would probably prefer to see her in intimate concert anyhow!! Have fun at picnic :)

Hey kids! I will be in Sydney for 10 days starting August 30. I will be traveling alone and it would be great to meet up with some straddlers while I’m there. I like to drink beer and go on adventures. If you’re interested, send me a message!

I haven’t ever been in Europe for longer than a week or so, but in case you’re interested, the Netherlands is particularly good as (in my experience, anyway!) Dutch people do tend to know English. I also went to Berlin recently and most (though not all) people did speak English, at least a little.
I love the Netherlands! I want to learn Dutch and live there, everyone can speak English there and in Flanders!
Any metroploitan city in Europe will be fairly easy to navigate in English. English is the default international option, so any area catering to tourists will likely have a lot of English speaking people and signs.
I’ve lived abroad several times in countries where I did not speak the language and have never had big problems getting around or…[Read more]
really good advice. thanks!
I agree with the others, you shouldn’t have a problem. One thing you should do though, is try to learn the language — when I was last travelling I found listening to pod casts was great, and easy to do while you were on trains, planes etc. The most important word you’ll need is excuse me. The German is “entschuldigung,” which takes some…[Read more]
If you want to go north, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland are essentially bilingual countries… most people you meet will be fluent and the ones who aren’t can still speak conversational English. They are kind of expensive though, especially Norway. Sweden is a little cheaper than Denmark.
Germany in the cities is fine… touristy parts of…[Read more]
