group for riese to ask people questions about things/information she needs for some post 12 years, 4 months agoWhat is a movie or teevee show where somebody makes things happen in dreams or in some other world that then has impact on the real actual present physical world?
-

-
um, inception?

yeah – i was going to suggest the butterfly effect as well.
-
kinda the matrix?

I’m kind of confused about the question so I might be answering this wrong but as far as something happening in a dream and then significantly effecting the decision making of the dreamer, Oklahoma! is the most famous example I can think of. The dream ballet.

The Lathe of Heaven has this theme. It was a book by Urusula Le Guin and a crazy made-for-PBS movie in the 70s. Main character George Orr, which is fun to say. It’s literally what you’re saying here – he has dreams and then wakes up to find the world has changed to match his dream.
-
Mullholland Drive? Also I feel like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind kind of fits this theme because it feels dream-like.
-
yes yes yes yes
i think i was thinking of inception or the matrix or mulholland drive or eternal sunshine of the spotless mindthank you!

Science Fictional 12 years, 5 months agoKay, for me it was Stranger in a Strange Land that did it first, but we all have science fiction books that made us go “HOLY FUCKSHIT” loudly and embarassingly in a public place or around relations, and/or get goosebumps. I miss that, and I’ve exhausted the library around here. Any suggestions?

I don’t know how you feel about short fiction, but Ted Chiang’s collection Story of Your Life and Others is amazing.
-
Oh and also? Anything by Samuel Delany. My favorite is Babel 17. (Bonus: He is super gay and has an amazing beard. The face kind, not the fake wife kind.)
-
One of the earliest stories that really made me go ‘HOLY FUCKSHIT’ was ‘The City and the Stars’, by Arthur C. Clarke. ‘The Gods Themselves’ by Asimov is another that was really important for me. I have a ton of short stories that I could recommend, but I very strongly recommend the following to everyone everywhere unless you’ve already read a…[Read more]

Tanith Lee (gender things) and Ray Bradbury (life things. was brokenhearted when I found out he doesn’t think women should read scifi)
-
harrison bergeron.. read it and lost my shit.

Oh, this is kind of a weird one, but the book Feed by M.T. Anderson really pretty much blew my mind when I was a teenager.
