Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago @internrachel @julia1 I’ve just read No Logo by Naomi Klein 446 pages. It’s split into 4 sections: No Space, No Choice, No Jobs, No Logo .
No Space is about a lack of non-branded public space, which isn’t a lot more interesting than it sounds so I’ll leave it at that.
No Choice is better than the first section and is about big corporations damaging smaller businesses. It isn’t the worst thing that big corporations get up to. You can tell from the Tesco Riot in Bristol that people still think it’s a big issue though (http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/gallery/2011/apr/22/tesco-police#/?picture=373914700&index=1)
No Jobs is about the loss of jobs in the first world to be replaced with bad jobs in retail and exploitation in third world factories. This is probably the most worthwhile section of the book. I saw this cartoon today and I think it’s pretty relevant http://www.worldcrunch.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/node-gallery-prvaslika/danzcolor4817.jpg
No Logo is about the backlash against corporations and how corporations brand image has become their big weakness. Companies can be forced to behave ethically because they can’t afford to look bad.
I had started it once before and stopped but I really started to enjoy it when I got to the No Choice section it’s just a pity that’s 100 pages in.
if you liked no logo i would highly recommend the shock doctrine also by naomi klein, if you haven’t read it. i learned so much. it also took me 6 mths to read though.
I wanted to read Shock Doctrine but I read No Logo because it was on the shelf. I’ll have to read it at some point though.
