We Love Documentaries 12 years, 4 months agoI just watched a recent BBC documentary about the extent of child poverty in the UK called Poor Kids. It was interesting in an angering and upsetting kind of way. The whole thing can be found on youtube if anyone’s interested.

Skins Fans on Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoOk, I know I said we shouldn’t discuss Skins US but…does anyone actually care that it was canceled? I could never make it through an episode. I read Heather Hogan’s recaps on AE and I could never understand what she saw in it.

I managed to get through every episode, but it always felt like a chore. I look forward to watching UK Skins the morning after the episodes air, but with US Skins, I was like, “Ehhh, I gotta sit through this fucking show again…”. On the one hand, thank GOD it’s been cancelled. On the other hand, since the intention was to give the characters…[Read more]

Yeah, I was kind of interested in how they were going to redeem Tea. I know from Elsley’s interviews with AE that it was part of some grander plan he had where she was going to turn out to be definitively lesbian. Oh well.

the reason either skins existed was because it talked about stuff that wasn’t ‘okay’ to talk about, and even though the american version was watered down and dramatized, it was better than just degrassi and everything else on mtv. so i’m sad that random crazy delusional people have the clout to get a unique show that says and shows something…[Read more]

I think blaming just the Parents Television Council is a mistake. Sure, they got advertisers to leave, but MTV was able to find others to replace them. If anything, “moral panics” like this just get more people curious about the show. What doomed it was that it was also critically panned and people just weren’t watching it.
Also, I don’t think…[Read more]-
i didn’t mean to just blame them (though you can’t doubt that they helped/scared sponsors). they just particularly anger me, like in general. but i do get what you are saying. and no matter why it was cancelled, i stand by the fact that american tv needs something more realistic for teenagers that is blunt. i meant that to be my main point, but…[Read more]

They did play a part, but personally I think the sponsors would have turned tail eventually due to the low ratings.
