The parents are the tricky ones. All of my close friends know but I’m too afraid to tell my parents. They’re christian (dad more so than mom) and I’m afraid I’ll become their family secret that they’ll ignore or not acknowledge my sexuality to the rest of the family. Its like there’s never a good time to tell them. I’ve told myself that they must…[Read more]

So i am really glad that there is a group for straddlers coming out or plan on coming out. Currently I’m not out. But i have told one person i was gay, shes my college professor. I knew she was gay from day one when i walked into class(Shes gorgeous) and I would always sit in class wondering who to talk to. So one day i finally decided that i…[Read more]

I think it’s perfectly okay as long as it stays within the realm of fantasy. And actually, professor crushes can often be really good motivators to do extra-well in that class, as I learned my freshman year. The professor I had a crush on then is now writing recommendation letters for me for grad school. I doubt that would be the case if I had…[Read more]

I agree with the motivation thing. I worked 10x harder this semester to get good grades, especially that class. She is someone to talk to and she always offers to me if i need anything(advice wise) to email her and keep in touch. So i am grateful to have her for advice. It’s a hard adjustment. But it’s getting better. :)

Are there any ladies in here who came out or are coming out a little later (late 20s/30s)? All the local support groups I’m aware of are for teenagers and college age women so I’m trying the online route for support. I’ve come out to a few local people who identify as gay, lesbian, or genderqueer and I’ve been really disappointed by the fact…[Read more]

Seattlestraddle 11 years, 10 months agoHey Seattlestraddlers!
My roommate and I are going to Andrea Gibson’s show at Fremont Abbey next Friday, December 2nd. Does anyone want to join us for a night of awesome poetry and queeriosity? All ages are welcome (not just over 21s!), tickets are only $12 ($10 w/ student ID) and it’s a benefit for the BENT Writing Institute. You can buy…[Read more]

I would like some advice on coming out to my roommate. I have no clue whether she’s homophobic or not. She’s pretty religious, and I think probably conservative (we haven’t really talked politics). I’ve brought up gay things/people before and she literally had no reaction, so I don’t know if that means she doesn’t care or didn’t want to get into…[Read more]

Thanks for the advice!

I agree that you should test the waters with gay-related topics, and you never know – she might surprise you. Young fundamentalists are increasingly likely to disagree with their churches on gay rights, especially ones who actually know gay people. I knew plenty of people in high school who were lock-step with what their pastor or church believed…[Read more]

So, Im about to go to my university’s GLBTQA student org meeting, which is a first for me. So far Im out to pretty much no one, so this is a rather large step… and Im sorta freaking out >< It's no big deal, right? So why cant I remember that, lol. Sigh
-
How did it go? I remember feeling the exact same way last year when I went to my school’s LGBT group.
-
It went really well, better than I was hoping. Walking in the door was scary as shit, lol. So many people! But everyone was friendly, and that was awesome. Something to go to again, for sure. :)
-
Great! I’m glad it was a good experience. I felt like I basically had “gay” tattooed to my forehead and had to keep telling myself that no one there cared whether I was gay or straight or whatever. It probably didn’t help that I hadn’t come out to anybody yet.
-
Yeah, there was that too. But then I thought about how oblivious I was about the group before I went looking for it, so that made things a bit better. Im in no shape to come out to friends/family at the moment… need to finish figuring myself out first, lol
-
-
That’s awesome that it went well! I was going to say that LGBTQA groups in college usually have at least a few straight ally members so don’t worry that you’re announcing your sexuality in any way.

Since my apartmentmate and I are also in search of a lesbian posse, we both moved to Seattle in the last six months, AND she recently got seriously addicted to The L Word (and we both like booze), we’d love to join your mafia/go to parks/drink coffee. Send me a message and we’ll figure something out!

Seattlestraddle 11 years, 11 months agoSeattle! I have a crusty friend in need. She is in need of a haircut. Preferably a haircut done by someone who doesn’t mind her lack of shampoo, blowdrying, straight-ironing, crimping, gel, etc. Recommendations? Aspiring haircutters willing to barter?

I always have these really really perfect moments for coming out, but I never take them. For instance, at my school both students from low-income families and students who identify as LGBTQ are considered minorities, and when one of my friends was listing the minority groups, I laughed and said, “Well, I’m a minority,” and she said, “I had no idea…[Read more]
