Autostraddle Musicians 12 years, 4 months agoI love to sing. A lot. Mostly indie rock and moody singer songwriter stuff. I would like to start writing lyrics that could be turned into songs, but I’m trying to get over the fear barrier. I’ve always wanted to sing with someone or multiple someones who play instruments, but have been to shy to advertise myself.

Autostraddle Musicians 12 years, 4 months agoAny other composers here? What sorts of things are you working on right now? I’m almost finished with a piece for voice, and I really love it. I’m starting to think that maybe vocal writing is my “thing” and I should focus on that more from now on.
-
i arranged an accompanied brahms lied for piano solo, does that count?
by the way what notation program(s) do you use, do you have any recommendations? i use musescore and it’s quite fiddly, i guess nothing compares to the ease of pencil and eraser.-
I’d recommend Sibelius, its not perfect but it can do almost anything; and its pretty intuitive so it doesn’t take too long to learn.
BUT its suuuper expensive so you’d need to download it or get a cracked copy, unless you’re rich-
nah, dude. I’m all about finale. But really, it’s not that different from sibelius. They’re both great software choices. I’ve been using finale for a couple of years now, and it’s been pretty great.
-
One of my fellow comp majors said that Sibelius vs. Finale is like Mac vs. PC for composers, and I think he’s right. Anyway, I’m on Team Sibelius – I find it less confusing to use and I like the look of the scores better.

anybody here a college student in Boston? I, for one, hail from BU.
-
I’m at summer school at the Fletcher School at Tufts if that counts…
-
close enough haha. tufts is great, are you studying international relations?
-
Yes! One class on Human Rights Law and one on Global Economic Issues. What are you majoring in?
-
international relations! with a dual degree in public health. gah human rights law is so cool, i’m hoping to specialize in international law and diplomacy.
-
Nice!

I just finished college (Northeastern) earlier this month!
-
cool! what did you major in/ what the heck are you planning to do with your life now? (not to put the stress on :P)
-
I majored in theater (I mean, who needs employability, right?) so I’m auditioning for various local things, and my friends and I are starting up a theater company and writing new plays.
And imbibing margaritas, which is essential.
-
pfft useful majors are for the weak. i love when adults ask what my major is and then immediately upon my response are like “sooo what can you do with that?”
neat so you are staying in boston then? there’s a pretty good theater scene there. i wish you luck with all your auditions!
-
Haha, that’s pretty much standard response to my major. I think the family’s finally gotten used to it, though.
I’m definitely staying in Boston for at least another year. It does have a good theater scene! I’ve got auditions on Sunday, so thanks for the well wishes! *fingers crossed*
