NYC Straddlers 11 years, 8 months agohi! moving to NYC and was wondering:
1) what burroughs in NY should i be looking at/recommended? i’ll be working near the Canal Street stop/Chinatown. i need an area that’s safe, conveniently located to a metro, not insanely expensive and if it has character/flavor – then that would be even more fantastic… what’s good?

1) According to my OkCupid all the queer-mo’s live in Brooklyn. ALL OF THEM. But seriously, Brooklyn. I’m gonna be moving there too in the summer. I’m a life long NY’er but I’m really not familiar with Brooklyn at all so maybe someone else could give more info as to what ‘hoods are best and all that. Obviously the better the neighborhood, the more…[Read more]

I currently live in the West Village (Manhattan). It’s kind of expensive, but if you’re looking for somewhere safe and near bars/cute coffee shops/bakeries/unbelievable restaurants/greenmarkets/everything else you’ll ever need, this is the place to go. Greenwich Village in general is amazing. Also, I know that there is a lot of hype, but you…[Read more]

1) Brooklyn is quite close to Chinatown, and there are some nice neighborhoods off the N & R lines. I live in Boerum Hill (very pleasant and fairly cheap right now, but everything might change after the new basketball stadium is finished) which is through the Atlantic Ave/Pacific St subway stop. The next few stops (up through 4th Av/9th St) are…[Read more]

1. I used to live in Chinatown. Anywhere off the 6 or N/Q/R is really convenient. I live in Greenwich Village now. The East Village is a bit cheaper and near the 6, depending how far east you are. I’d also recommend Brooklyn, although I know very little about it.
2. I found mine through a friend, who found it through a broker. I’ve found…[Read more]

thank you! definitely excited about the suggestions on the places to go/see/explore…not so much about the CL’ing or finding a broker who’s likely going to enjoy charging me an arm and a leg to find a simple space to hang my proverbial hat. i’ve been on CL but because its so early on, there’s not yet much to work with. i’ve been hearing the most…[Read more]

1) Brooklyn: Fort Greene/Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights are very in now. Crown Heights is right next door, not as ‘safe’ but much, much cheaper, and is a pretty vibrant neighbourhood.
2) Hmm, not sure if this answer is too late but you can try the Listings Project. It has a focus on creative types (so, lots of art studios listed) but each place…[Read more]

Hey Evita!
1) In terms of borough locations, I’d say anywhere but Staten Island (no subways, 20 minute ferry ride to and from Manhattan). Also, considering your job is in lower Manhattan, I’d stay away from the Bronx as well. However, if you find a decently priced place close to an express train, it might be worth it. Biggest questions to ask…[Read more]
1) Def Brooklyn, Manhattan or Queens. Forest Hills in Queens and Park Slope and Williamsburg in BK are great spots.
2) Look at the NY Times Real Estate section and find a brokerage service. Most don’t even charge!
3) Read Autostraddle’s queer guide to NYC, it’s awesome!
