Alright nerd-straddlers, let’s break the awkward. What’s your nerd passion?
Mine is computers. I’m fluent in many languages.
-
biology nerd here \o/
-
Computing student here. Unfortunately thats like a 1-10 ratio of girls to guys, D’OH. But I really love programming and will be working in probably software or games someday hopefully
-
Oceanography and marine biology! Delaying grad school by raising larval sea animals in an aquarium.
-
I’m also in Civil Engineering! But I’m hoping to go into the construction management side.
-
Biology nerd, I’m just now watching a documentary on Darwins life. I keep refering to him as Dazza to my flatmate, because we’re besties me and Dazza.
-
My nerd passions are diverse! Currently I’m just beginning to get into programming. I only know one language but I’m in the process of learning more. I don’t know how useful that is without practicing and becoming more computer-fluent in general. Do any of you more experienced nerds have tips/resources/activities to recommend?
-
I’m an IT support and Web Developer for work but my nerdiness extends to pop culture as well. I love good sciFi especially (BSG, Firefly, STTNG, Ursula LeGuin, Samuel Delany just to start)…

Science Fictional 12 years, 4 months agoSo what are you all reading right now/what did you just finish/what are you planning to start?
-
I’m reading Kim Harrison’s books about a witch named Rachel. Not so science fictiony, but kinda close.
-
I’m reading Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, not as exotically science-fictiony as his other works but it’s about the future (from 1952) and how automation creates a world underclass. Resonates quite well with modern times, actually….
-
I’m reading the Hunger Games series, which isn’t half-bad. It’s kind of science fictiony; it’s a dystopian society? So, yeah. There’s technology in it, too, but it does focus on the poverty stricken who don’t reap the benefits of all of this newfangled wonderfulness, and when the main character has to participate in the Games, she’s bewildered.…[Read more]

I JUST finished Hunger Games! Like 3 days ago. It’s not usually my thing, since I’m not usually into the YA stuff, but I thought most of it was pretty cool. I haven’t seen or read Battle Royale, but I’m aware that a lot of the plot may be similar to that movie/book/manga, so I’m pretty curious about that right now.

Science Fictional 12 years, 4 months agoI’ve read Stranger in a Strange Land and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, both of which I LOVED ..due in no small part to Heinlein’s positive portrayals of polyamory.
Unfortunately he did have some *cough* RIDICULOUS views of women.
The only Asimov I’ve read is his short story The Last Question, which leads me to believe I MUST READ MORE.-
If you can get your hands on it, I highly recommend the short story collection ‘The Edge of Tomorrow’. It’s collected fiction (and a few non-fiction essays) by Asimov about science and scientists. It has The Last Question in it, as well as couple of his other really popular short stories like Nightfall and The Ugly Little Boy, but it also has a…[Read more]

Added to my Goodreads queue! Unfortunately I still have TONS of school reading to do first :(

Yeah, the misogyny thing upsets me, but the polyamory thing makes me happy, and meh. So many feelings :/ The Last Question is one of the more recent Asimov pieces I’ve read, I mainly devoured his work when I was younger. TLQ gave me effing goosebumps, you guys I <3 it. And "The Edge of Tomorrow" sounds fantastamazing as well. Short stories FTW.…[Read more]

Did you read the uncut edition of Stranger? I think it is a better book. And right on with the appreciation for polyamory. Heinlein, I think, tried to portray women as having great strength, but sometimes he was just made of fail in his writing. I actually find the positive portrayal of poly to be one of the main reason’s I like Jordan’s Wheel of…[Read more]

The uncut version was SO MUCH BETTER. I understood it way more than I did when I read the ending of the first one, which made me go “What the HELLLLL” really emphatically while on a roadtrip with my cousins, and they just didn’t get it.
“HE’S AN ANGEL?! HE’S A MARTIAN! WTFFFFF”
“Shut up Kat”
-
Ha ha ha! I haven’t read the cut version, but from what friends have said it sounds…lacking. Did you know there is an actual Church of All Worlds? I hear they’re not as active as they used to be though.

Robbie is super sad! A lot of people talk about how is work isn’t very emotional, but I don’t think those people have read Robbie, or The Ugly Little Boy.
-
*his, not is.

Science Fictional 12 years, 4 months agoFor some reason I can’t reply to Nomi’s update! I don’t know why. Here is what I’ve been trying to post for the past few minutes though: I’ve read things by all of these authors, except CJ Cherryh. I have VERY strong feelings (two shelves of my bookcase worth!) about Isaac Asimov. I saw a guy at the movie theater last night who looked just like N…[Read more]

Science Fictional 12 years, 4 months ago@nomi: for some reason the reply button on your post is broken god DAMN it.
Right when I joined I was all “hey I should see if anybody here likes Asimov and/or Heinlen” but I scrolled down, saw your post, freaked out and went to reply and it DIDN’T WORK D:
So anyway: Stranger in a Strange Land blew my mind when I was a freshman. I read The…[Read more]
