My friend Lisa is looking for some readers to beta a novel she’s line editing (it’s already sold to a publisher; her editor wants some younger readers to go over it and make sure all the references are current). Any takers?
Description as follows: “Sixteen-year-old Colby Bingham’s heart has been broken too many times. Her mother’s been dead…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoHi friends, I’m looking for a lesbian author of color, who has written fiction preferably. Does anyone have any recommendations? It’s for my book club, trying to diversify it a bit.
-
Felicia Luna Lemus (San Francisco!), Jewelle Gomez (vampires!), Mayra Lazara Dole (Miami! Coming Out!), Malinda Lo (fantasy without dragons!) and more listed here: http://zahrawithaz.livejournal.com/12471.html

Seconding the Jewelle Gomez and Malinda Lo recs! If I recall correctly, Octavia Butler was a lesbian (but even if I’m wrong, you should read her because she is awesome!). I don’t know if Nalo Hopkinson, who I am loving a lot right now, is a lesbian, but her book “The Salt Roads” does have significant lesbian content. One of the stories in…[Read more]

thanks guys! That will help a lot. I just suggested last night that next year we do all minority authors, and got treated with blank stares :( so my picks are going to be double minorities if I can help it :)

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoSo everyone seems to have read Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, but has anyone read The Little Friend? It has to be my favourite book. And I’m a person who can never choose faves.

I love it when you’re stuck in the limbo of writers block (or in this case, panel layout block) and then all of a sudden EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE. Then your fingers just fly and work gets done.
-
is anyone else going to touch that flying fingers joke, or shall i take a crack at it?
-
lmao. By all means, got for it. That’s what I get for writing on a forum at 3-4am :p

Hahaha I bet it would be an excellent joke. But I agree I love when I get stuck. It means some amazing things are headed my way. I leave my house and go sit somewhere public. I watch people and make up stories about their lives. It helps loads and its kind of fun. Especially when your wired on caffeine. 8D

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI just finished reading “The History of White People” by Nell Irvin Painter (I think I saw it recommended on here) and it was really interesting. I’m working on “Persistence: All Ways Butch and Femme” now and really enjoying it so far.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI love Nalo Hopkinson! She’s a scifi writer whose stories are based in Caribbean culture, which is an element I really haven’t seen incorporated into scifi before. I read her first book ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ and was really excited about it. So I went out and found another of her books, ‘Midnight Robber,’ and I just started it today. So…[Read more]

I think I need to read these all. (Assuming I can even find them here in the Antipodes :P)
-
If you can find them, you should definitely give them a try! Now that I’m thinking about it, I vaguely recall reading and liking another one of her books several years ago. It was called something like “The Salt Roads” or maybe just “Salt Roads” and it had time travel. So she’s got something for any scifi preference!

I read Brown Girl in the Ring! I’d forgotten it, I ‘m going to have to find some other stuff by her, because it was an AWESOME book.

If I had the time. I will have the time this summer (after June 15th.) Is that cool? I’m 18, but super childish at times, and I adore Young Adult stuff. Do I qualify?

:O Teen lesbians AND animals?! I would LOVE to read that. What do I need to do for this to happen?
Hey–Lisa found her beta reader, but I can ask if she’s looking for another. Thank you for the offer!
