Genderstraddlers 12 years, 6 months agoI’ve had a short haircut (and people have been mistaking me for a 13 year old boy) since 2006. Last summer I went to China to see the World Expo with my family. After consuming large quantities of water in the sweltering heat I had to go pee, so my sister and I went to the ladies’ room. The room was largely empty except for two employees. They…[Read more]

Alright nerd-straddlers, let’s break the awkward. What’s your nerd passion?
Mine is computers. I’m fluent in many languages.
-
biology nerd here \o/
-
Computing student here. Unfortunately thats like a 1-10 ratio of girls to guys, D’OH. But I really love programming and will be working in probably software or games someday hopefully
-
Oceanography and marine biology! Delaying grad school by raising larval sea animals in an aquarium.
-
I’m also in Civil Engineering! But I’m hoping to go into the construction management side.
-
Biology nerd, I’m just now watching a documentary on Darwins life. I keep refering to him as Dazza to my flatmate, because we’re besties me and Dazza.
-
My nerd passions are diverse! Currently I’m just beginning to get into programming. I only know one language but I’m in the process of learning more. I don’t know how useful that is without practicing and becoming more computer-fluent in general. Do any of you more experienced nerds have tips/resources/activities to recommend?
-
I’m an IT support and Web Developer for work but my nerdiness extends to pop culture as well. I love good sciFi especially (BSG, Firefly, STTNG, Ursula LeGuin, Samuel Delany just to start)…

Geez! I’m sorry you had to go through that! I find public bathrooms really difficult too. I went to a queer conference and experienced gender neutral bathrooms for the first time and they were absolutely amazing. I’ve learned how to hold it for a really long time but if I must go I look for the most out of the way, deserted restroom I can find.
Thanks. Yeah, I do the same thing. On the plus side it means I’m great at long road trips and hiking, haha
You definitely don’t need to ‘feel stupid’ about it… I think gendered bathrooms are uniquely terrifying spaces in the sense that the presence of someone presenting some ‘alternative’ to the socially accepted gender presentation of whatever the designated sex of that bathroom can be perceived as a threat by a ‘socially acceptable’ gender…[Read more]
Thanks for your response. This reminds me we read a piece I think by Judith Butler about bathrooms and gendered spaces in a women & gender studies class that I took senior year of college. For our discussion group (we did an open blog/forum) I wrote a whole long rant about my encounters with this subject and all the other (nongenderstraddling)…[Read more]
Heh, I don’t trust people enough to ever let my guard down in public spaces. For the most part I’ve learned to just ignore peoples’ reactions and just not give a crap…but there’s always a small part of my consciousness that is very aware of how vulnerable I am, and how easily targeted I could be in a certain situation. I’ve been rocking the…[Read more]
According to my tally so far this year, only a couple of waitresses from downtown Toronto or NYC have picked up on the fact that I’m female. At least until I walk into a restroom everyone automatically assumes I’m male. I found this to be freeing in a way when I still lived near Harlem and it meant walking at night didn’t seem so dangerous (at…[Read more]
Yeah I’ve started using the ‘look like a dude’ bit to my advantage, at least if I’m feeling uncomfortable in a public area. I feel like if I keep a distance and keep my head down, most people will *probably* just assume I’m a 13 yr old boy and carry on with their lives. I have a pretty feminine face and and voice though, so it doesn’t work well…[Read more]
Aww. I’m sorry your mom reacts that way. And haha ikr – I don’t shop for clothes enough to make this a statistically significant observation, but the places I’ve been, whoever determined the floor space usage tends to place the (lacy/frilly) underwear section right in the middle of the room…
Heh thanks, though it actually doesn’t bother me too much; it’s more of an irritant than anything else… we’re at a ‘comfortable’ place right now where I know she’ll never approve, but she’s not going to disown me or anything either – which is something I know a LOT of people do have to deal with. So I tend to just joke about it and get on with…[Read more]
I recently cut my hair very short and got told I looked like a little boy. Which…sometimes I’m in a more densely populated area (small town girl, here) and I see someone who I think might be a cute, Bieber-ish lesbian, and it’s actually a little boy, and I’m just like “FUCK.”
Now I’m a bit scared about the whole public restroom thing,…[Read more]
WELL this makes me feel better. I thought I was the only one who assumes prepubescent boys are lesbians on a semi-regular basis. I always start giggling to myself after I realize my mistake because I start imagining what their parents would think if only they knew…
I stayed in these tiny dorms at my university that had gender neutral bathrooms,…[Read more]
Your school seems awesome and it sounds like you’ll have a great experience there. I’d say don’t be afraid of public spaces (I’m working on that myself) but be aware of your surroundings. Well that’s just kind of common sense I guess. Err carry on young grasshopper. :3
