Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoJust finished up Thr3e By Ted Dekker from yesterday. Full of plot twists, horror and just all around craziness. Although my least favorite part would have to be Kevin’s family background. This book is one you won’t want to put down and i highly recommend it to whoever hasn’t read it!

pdx autostraddlers 12 years, 4 months agoPosting this as a new post too, so people will actually see it if they come on here: I’m going to Crave tonight, and I’m wearing a short-sleeved white dress with rainbow knee socks. Introduce yourself if you dare! Please don’t sneak up on me, I startle easily.

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI just finished reading “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexei (230 pages) after a friend recommended it to me (she’s reading her way through all the books that have won National Book Awards — previously, she read through all the Caldecott Medal winners, and I can usually trust her taste in books). It tells the story…[Read more]

Sherman Alexei is a fantatic writer, isn’t he? I love his work.
-
He is, indeed. And I have a particular fondness for any writer who can break my heart in one paragraph and make me laugh in the next. :) I’m adding all of his other books to my “to read” list.

My love for Sherman Alexie is HUGE. He is such a fantastic writer (and person in general). We were assigned the Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven, which is a collection of short stories that are all interrelated. I fell in love ever since. Also, this essay that he wrote this month is amazing, you should check it out!…[Read more]

He also writes, produces and directs films! ‘Smoke Signals’ was based on one of his short stories and introduced me to the fantastic Adam Beech. The Business of Fancydancing is just beautiful and has a gay protagonist.
-
I saw ‘Smoke Signals’ years and years ago and loved it! I would like to revisit it soon. :D
I will definitely have to check out The Business of Fancydancing, thanks!

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI just finished reading The Help. It’s such a compelling story and very well written in 3 different voices. Reading the author biography was also interesting. I definitely recommend it! @internrachel @julia1

I did this backwards and watched the film before reading the book. I liked both! Some of the more interesting parts were only in the book, like the aftermath of Chris’s death. I’m not sure what to make of this quote, though:
“She must be fucking nuts. You know what I bet? I bet they think I’m a…[Read more]-
I think I would have to listen to the soundtrack while reading the book because Eddie Vedder did such an amazing job with it that I can’t imagine Chris’ story without the music.

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoWhile looking after a friend’s kids today, I read The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. At 184 pages, I was a little wishy washy about it at first because its told in first person speaking to an unidentified American in Pakistan. It was awkward to read at first because the narrator is so formal in his speech. Because it is first person,…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI’m just starting Staceyann Chin’s memoir, The Other Side of Paradise. I bought it over a year ago at a spoken word thing, where she mostly did spoken word (so, not just her reading from her book), and made me cry in my little folding chair. Right now in the book, she’s 8, so I haven’t gotten that far but already I feel like it has some sad stuff.…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoReading Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn An amazeballs look at who Katharine Hepburn really was and from her childhood to the women she had to the women she had relationships with. Totally enjoying it not just for the lesbian history but also for who the woman was and grew to be as a person. http://amzn.to/lcangM
