pdx autostraddlers 11 years, 5 months agoHave you guys heard/read about femme flagging? It seems like a neat idea and I was wondering if anyone has their own codes to share. I’m sticking with alternating pastel pink and blue, with a light purple on my ring finger.
-
I feel like I would do this but I’m too lazy to actually paint my nails. One amiga of mine wears rainbow socks, but you can only see the stripes if her shoes are off.
-
That’s pretty cool, I love fun socks. I have some toe socks with dogs on the toes.
-
-
So I know what femme flagging is from the context of this conversation but actually have no idea what it is. Is it really a thing? if so, where did it come from? If it isn’t a thing we really need to make it one.

I stumbled across this while looking up a Western blot protocol. I thought maybe some of you would enjoy the pseudostats :P

Hey, so I guess I’m looking for advice, I’d love to be all casual and cool coming out to my classmates when it sort-of tangentially comes up in conversation, but I never take the opportunity. Today a classmate was asking me why I didn’t have a boyfriend yet, and I just kind of mumbled and nodded because it felt like my legs were gonna explode. I’m…[Read more]

I have the same problem. There have been so many opportunities for me to just mention it, but I always clam up. I guess I don’t really have any advice, just commiseration.

That’s okay! It’s good to know I’m not the only one!

Oh man, I’ve been there. I went to a Catholic high school (I didn’t even THINK about coming out there) and now I’m at a historically Catholic college within a secular university where a lot of the people are still Catholic or were at least raised that way.
I just have to say that there are some people who are more accepting than you would think,…[Read more]

some people may not think for a fact that you are straight i know tonss of people who use that question to make sure your really a lesbian and to confirm that the rumors are true you know?
-
also i’ve been through the same thing but it helps to just nnot think about what your saying and just blurt out well…im gay and then after that things go one of 2 ways the bad way or the good way which usually means a shit ton of questions :)
-
Hey I was having the same problem recently….I kept missing all the obvious cues and was starting to go a bit crazy…in the end I just forced it into the conversation, it was awkward, but its out and I feel better now :) just go for it x

hey all,
I’m a first year in a biology PhD program and I’m currently finishing up my lab rotations: I have to choose which lab I’m going to do my thesis work in soon. The thing is, I want somewhere where I’ll be comfortable being out but those sorts of discussions never came up. The closest thing I’ve heard to discussion of queer people was one…[Read more]

I haven’t really had to deal with this, as I’m in a counseling masters program. Being okay with gay is kind of a requirement of being a professional counselor. So all my professors and advisers have been non-judgey and supportive.
Good luck in your search! -
Do you know any 2nd or 3rd years that are more familiar with the various professors who could at least let you know if any of them are homophobes? It’s generally been my experience that once someone has been to school long enough to get a doctorate, they are generally pretty open-minded, but obviously not 100% of the time. I don’t know if that…[Read more]

I’m a second year in a biology PhD. My advisor is pretty open-minded, as is the faculty in general – another prof in biology is openly gay – so it was not really an issue for me. At my university, graduate students go directly to work with their advisor of choice, and given that my advisor didn’t bat an eye to my alternative hairstyle and…[Read more]

thanks for your advice all! (I had an exam this week and between that/lab/teaching i’ve been virtually cut off from the internet, otherwise I would’ve said thanks earlier :P) what complicates things for me a little bit is that all the rotations I’ve done are with very, very new professors, as in I’m pretty sure all of them have been here for less…[Read more]

Hey. I don’t know if you picked already, but you need to casually drop your gayness in convo or something. When I was rotating my gf dumped me and I was a little bit teary in my advisor’s office, she noticed, I told her why.
Now I’m in her lab and everybody knows I’m the gayest gay that ever gayed. So just…be open. It helps.

pdx autostraddlers 11 years, 6 months agoJust a reminder for anyone who is new/hasn’t checked in a while, there will be a meetup (YAY!) on March 31st, starting at 3:30pm at Ground Kontrol ( 511 NW Couch St.)
Should we make up a secret handshake or something so we can be assured we’re talking to other ‘straddlers and as not to freak out random strangers by approaching them excitedly about…[Read more]-
Crap… that is the day I am going to Seattle! I will go to another meet-up another time, that’s for sure.
-
Would love to meet up and hang, but not sure I can get there before early evening. Any idea how late this might go? (reply here or DM me). thanks!
-
No idea how late it’s running, but since I am unfortunately just 6 months shy of being 21, I’m going to the backspace around the corner when they start kicking minors out to chill. Only if I have other people to chill with though.
