feminist zine about safe sex 12 years, 3 months ago I love your idea so much!! I think you should not forget to have lots of beautiful pictures in your zine because people love to look at beautiful pictures.
Have a “greatest feminists of our time collage” or something. Also, make sure you cover both gay and strait safe sex. and definitely write about rape, but be really careful that your info is accurate.
(I am totally going to tell you to go on my blog, where you can find an article about me, getting almost raped by a man http://lostclueless.blogspot.com/2011/02/serious-matter.html) also, I can send you a copy of my class notes about rape from a psychology class I took.
Oh wow this is great thank you! I’d love to include your story in the zine if you would allow me (you can edit it/have full control of what you want to be published). Also, your notes would be very much appreciated!
Since I’m a virgin/only 17, I’m really worried about making sure my info is correct. I already have a ton of credible sites bookmarked and plan on abusing the fuck out of the Planned Parenthood site.
Just tell me how many words you want from that story and I’ll edit accordingly. Also, be careful to alway cite your references properly (you can have a resource page at the end where you put all the websites’ ulrs and a short description)
And think about connecting people with local resources, like the planed parenthood, a phone help line, etc.
here are my notes, they are from a legal point of view and very technical, so if you want more explanations, don’t be afraid to ask (I threw sexual harrasment in, as good measure, because it also is an issue on which there is a lot of disinformation.)
Rape
Rape myths:
-sexual assault is common
-it is commited by strangers,
-women ask for it by the way they dress
-women derive pleasure from being a victim
-women lie about sexual assault
-it is dangerous to be alone in dark places.
Rape trauma syndrome:
acute phase: fear, anxiety, depression
-long term phase: phobias
-PTSD
3/4 rapes are commited by people they know.
Date rapes happen on week ends nights
assailant and victims use alcohol and drugs
typically not involving a weapon, but verbal threats.
Rapex: spiked women condom to prevent rape, used in african countries where rape is used as a war weapon
Expert testimony on rape are not always allowed because rape trauma syndrome has psychological symptoms that are common to other syndromes.
Spousal rape was not viewed as rape until 1980. also, force or threat must be proven.
Historical rape laws:
-blames the victim
-need resistance
Defense that sex was consensual, attacks to the victim’s reputation and lifestyle to make then look responsible for what happened.
Rape law now focuses on: behavior of assailant.
Rape shield law protects privacy of the victims sexual history. The only history that can be discussed is the one between the victim and the assailant.
prosecution attorney does not want the victim to elaborate during questioning from the defense. Answer the question and nothing else not to open other questions about the victim’s life.
Treatment of rapists: psychosurgery, surgical/chemical castration.
Sexual harassment: unwanted sexual advances.
-quid pro quo: sexual demands in exchange for employment benefits.
if that happens, get a paper trail (get them to put it in writing, report to management) if you get fired, get a witness and file a lawsuit.
-hostile workplace harassment: gender harassment (sexist jokes), unwanted sexual attention.
You’re right, an annotated bibliography is probably the best thing to include.
Since it’s going to be an e-zine (I may print a few copies off depending on the # of pages) I think i can include your entire post as it’s rather short/to the point/amazing. Also, how do you want me to credit you for your contribution (not just your blog post but your notes?)
“Finally, can you explain these two lines? Date rapes happen on week ends nights
assailant and victims use alcohol and drugs”
Just credit the story to “Isabel” and the notes to Professor T. G. Williams.
That par of the notes pretty much only means that you are more likely to get raped by someone your dating, after a w-e date , because on week nights dates, you drink less and are less expected to have intercourse. Also, it hits that rapers (assailants) do not always act on purpose, but also do so because they are intoxicated and on the other hand, victims might be too weakened fight back.
