TravelStraddle 9 years, 9 months ago Oh, oh. I posted in the NYC group thread, but here would be good for advice too right? I’m looking at going up to Toronto, then Montreal, then down to NYC, to Ithaca and then back to London, ON. Any advice for places to stay (preferably cheap backpackers/hostels), things to do? Feel free to PM; all thoughts/comments welcome!
When are you going to be in Montreal? I’m going to be there this weekend. My friend and I used this site for hotel, and we got a pretty good deal. Not sure what your budget is, but we’re really looking forward to the coupon book that comes with the travel deal.

I’d probably be heading up to Montreal, say, the 13th of December? Being an college student on exchange from New Zealand has its perks, but finding a place to stay/making travel plans for winter break ain’t one (well, not all the time). So I’d maybe be looking at stuff a bit cheaper than that (though those do look like some sweet deals)
Re: Toronto
What areas were you hoping to stay in? I only know of one backpacker hostel (global village backpackers), but it’s at a great central location, easy access to public transit, walking distance to lots of interesting places, and they have a bar that’s open to the public and lots of drink specials throughout the week. It might also be worthwhile to check out airbnb for listings in all of your destinations…
What do you most enjoy when travelling? That way I might be able to give some better suggestions. But a brewery tour at Steam Whistle Brewing would be at the top of a lot of people’s lists, there’s lots of foodie and drink places in the city, and like most urban centres, there are museums, art galleries, kitschy neighbourhoods, concerts, bars, etc. I guess it would also depend on how much time you were planning on staying in Toronto. I assume not much since you’re from London, and Toronto is probably nothing new.
I found a place to stay in Toronto, yay! Though I’ve heard pretty good things about the backpackers you mention.
To be honest I haven’t done a lot of travelling so it’s hard to say what I enjoy when I’m doing it for myself. I’d like to get a feel for the city, to see what it’s like.
I’ll be there from the afternoon of the 13th to the 17th, all things going well. I’m actually on a student exchange from New Zealand, so I haven’t done much travelling beyond going to Niagara one time.
At the moment I’m looking at checking out the AGO and the Kensington market, but the Brewery tour sounds cool so I’ll look into it.
Feel free to make more suggestions – I actually wouldn’t mind hearing about what other people think is worth doing in Toronto.
