Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 1 month ago In addition, I finished On The Origin of Stories, 414 pages not counting the hundred pages of index &c afterwards, by Brian Boyd. My parents gave me this a bunch of years and I was really unsure about it, because it’s about the evolution of stories. You have to understand, I’ve never been good at narration/story-telling, and prefer my fiction somewhat more experimental than straightforward “story-telling.” What this book did, in contrast, was to explain why literature is important to society. Basically, the author concludes, creativity offers us a way to understand life’s purpose–not by some intrinsic, crystallized knowledge, but through the evolution of culture and humanity. All of you book-readers should be profoundly interested in it. You can now defend your favorite past time against the engineers!
