Science Fictional 12 years, 5 months agoI am fairly new to the scifi realm of life. About five years ago I found this book “Night Watch” & liked the cover so I bought it. Turned out to be the first scifi book of my life. (fyi, I highly recommend this series by Sergey Lukyanenko…the films are quite good as well).
Since then, I’ve fallen in love with Firefly & Doctor Who. Still not…[Read more]

I like to watch shows with Michio Kaku and act like I actually understand what he’s talking about when most of it goes way over my head
-
you should read his books. he does a pretty good job of making it all make sense (because i also am usually like WTF are you saying MICHIO??!).
“Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel” is the book i am going to read next.
-
that’s a really good book (it has Dr. Who’s phone box on the cover!). i sometimes have trouble with the higher sciences (understanding the actual math) but i love reading about the concepts, and Kaku does a great job of explaining it for those of us who enjoy the mental exercise of speculating “could someone escape a black hole, or what would…[Read more]

oh really? wtf! my book cover is something different…aka the non-tardis on the cover edition.
-
the hardcover american version has the tardis jumping from one wormhole to another: http://amzn.to/wv9At
the paperback and international versions are different, i think-
i remember liking the chapter when they discuss how the tardis could be larger on the inside than the outside…whoa. fun science. :)

I read Parallel Worlds which was really interesting. I went through a phase where I read like six books in a row about string theory and quantum mechanics, and then I burned out that topic for a while. The math parts make no sense to me, but I understand the concepts that he brings up. But I may need to find that book, it has force fields,…[Read more]

Science Fictional 12 years, 5 months agoQuestion to start us off: Star Wars? Star Trek? Both? Or *gulp* neither?
-
both!
-
Star wars! But I liked star trek next generation
-
Star Wars all the way
-
I know more of characters from Star Wars than Star Trek. But I am tempted to go to Phoenix Comic-Con this month b/c Leonard Nimoy is going to be there. That’s about as Star Trekkie as I get I think. hm.
-
neither! I’ve seen two of the original trilogy star wars movies, a few Trek episodes and the new movie… I like my sci fi on the page, unless it’s 2001: a Space Odyssey, or the epic terrible/awesomeness of any filmed version of Dune.
-
I would have to say I am more star trek than star wars.
terrible/awesomeness of dune. yes i feel this.Although David Lynch > Syfy monstrosity. ANY DAY.
-
-
I go both ways!
-
gotta go with star trek
-
Star Trek was my first sci-fi show, so obviously it holds a special place in my heart. But I love me some Star Wars (non-prequel, but including the KotOR games), too!

Oooh, new people :) so, how is everyone? Who is everyone?
-
hey! I’m Tara from Adelaide… and I’m doing fairly good today (aside from a minor case of sniffles!!)
How are you…and who are you and what do you do? Aside from straddling…-
Oh you know, I straddle all day long :) what do I do – theoretically I work in a community legal practice and I am in my final year of uni – really mostly I just procrastinate. Also, I used to be from Adelaide! Nice town, I still miss it.
-
Nothing beats a good bit of straddling!! tehehe! I’m a great fan of procrastination… I believe I majored in it at uni, but then I left! And now I work in pharmacy playing with little old ladies drugs..! But I am thinking about going back to uni next year (if I can save enough money!!) What are you studying?
-
Yeah, uni is a financially tough act, hey. I’m pretty tired of being poor! What do you think you’ll study? Um, I’m writing an honours thesis on Australian citizenship at the moment, but the less said about it the better… it’s due in a month, eek!
-
I would like to study Womens studies and International Studies as a double degree (I did Int studies for a bit before and loved it) buuut it would have to be cross-institution because only one uni here offers Womens studies and it is the only one in the state which doesn’t offer Int studies.. Which means it could be a little messy!
That sounds…[Read more]

hiya, I’m Lyz I’m from the US, living in Port Douglas.
-
Cool Lyz, how do you like Port Douglas? What made you come over from the States?
-
Its BEAUTIFUL, I’m here on a working holiday visa for a year, but I’m trying to get my second year visa. I’ve wanted to come here since I was 6, so when the opportunity came up I flew down.

Asimov is awesome. Heinlein is good although harder to get into in my opinion first scifi book i ever read was citizen of the galaxy. I love Herbert. LOVE LOVE LOVE. #strongfeelings
Love, love, love CJ Cherryh. Stephenson routinely blows my mind. I run hot and cold on Gibson, and have little opinion on the others.
I’m so torn on Asimov–his novels, especially the Robots and Empire–they’re just so DRY. But I adore his short stories. The only Heinlein I ever really liked was The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.
I love Gibson and Herbert, didn’t really like Heinlein, all I remember from when I read Asimov was that I liked his writing but could only take it in small doses. Stephenson is next on my list of books to read.
You have to view any of the classics as historical documents, I think, because I find a lot of them full of really outdated attitudes. I like Heinlein the best of those three, but some of his stuff makes me cringe!
I live in Seattle, and I have this fantasy where I’m on a bus, or in a Starbucks, or something, reading my old worn copy of Snow Crash and then I see Neal Stephenson and I tell him that I’ve read every book he’s ever published and the first time I read Snow Crash I didn’t eat sleep or pee for 18 hours until I finished it. He gives me a hug or a…[Read more]
Ooh! I JUST started reading Cyteen, and I’m loving Cherryh’s style now that I’ve gotten through the incredibly-dry-prologue-that-took-far-too-long-to-read-despite-its-brevity…. But I’m really excited to devour this mammoth of a novel now.
