I have so many awkward moments. The last one occurred about 15 minutes ago, when I realized I had left my vibrator out on the shelf in the bathroom I share with my straight roommate, after she (and her fiance) both were in there before bed. Oh my god.
-
probably the most awkward roommate moment I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a few)
-
Youguys, you’re making me loathe the idea of rooming with a straight cisgirl who is also from my conservative small redneck town at college. I just feel like the potential for awkwadness is SUPER DUPER HIGH.
-
think of the fodder you’ll have for stories on this group. TOTALLY WORTH IT.
-
I just need to establish some sort of system with her that lets her know when I’d like our room to myself. I feel like establishing this system will be an awkward conversation in itself.
-
Approach it from the point of view that she probably wants a system just as much as you do. She won’t want you walking in on her either. Act like it’s totally normal!
-
this is an age-old college roommate quandary. you’ll figure it out. i’m not worried.
-
when you and your girl are playing “chess”, just text your roommate beforehand like “hey! cobra for 3o minutes! later!”.

Hey, so if I were to move to Australia, or relocate there for a bit anyway, what states have the most gay friendly legislation, and what cities have high concentrations of gaywads?
-
You should probably just head straight for Newtown, Sydney really ;) This site http://wearitwithpride.com.au/ is pretty fabulous also. Enter your state/the state you’re looking at heading to and a few demogrpahic details and it will give you a run down of the relevant legislation.
-
Sounds excellent. I might also consider Woolloomooloo for the novelty of living in the most hilariously named place ever. Perhaps that is the opiates talking, but I seriously can not stop giggling about Woolloomooloo. Definitely Sydney. Newtown is the gayborhood there, right?
-
Well, if its novelty you’re after, Kangarilla, Iron Knob and Boing Boing should probably be on your list as well… Newtown is most definitely the gaybourhood.
-
Newtown is a gayborhood, but also try Glebe, Paddington and Darlinghurst… I like Newtown’s atmosphere more though, some of the other places can be a bit super fashionable, whereas Newtown feels like more of any everyone’s welcome mix.
Melbourne is a wonderful city, too, and there are also inner city suburbs with high concentrations of gaywads,…[Read more]

Woolloomooloo is a tad expensive as it’s in the city. But I just want to say that as someone who has always lived in Sydney’s lower north shore I find it incredibly safe and it has never bothered me to be my gay old self here (but then I am also fairly femme).
Also novelty town names: wogga wogga.
-
cindy where are you from on the north shore?
-
just near north sydney.
-
oh cool, i grew up in mosman!

According a study I read for uni, the lowest ranking city for homophobia is Melbourne, followed (much to my shock!) by Perth, then Sydney.
I moved to Melbourne from Perth a couple of years ago, and the gayness of the city is such a beautiful thing. Sydney’s also meant to be quite nice, I dont like it so much myself.
Good luck with move! -
I would love to talk up my city but I can’t, Adelaide is pretty shit in the homo department. My recommendation would be Melbourne, I would live in Brunswick if I could!
-
I live in Glebe (Sydney) and it is extremely queer. It’s a little expensive though – I feel like inner city suburbs like Enmore, Stanmore, Marrickville and Leichhardt are better value.
Woolloomooloo is one of the only places in Sydney where I feel concerned about my safety.
-
well, hating on canberra (where I live) is a popular pasttime here, but my mother says that it is the lesbian capital of australia. so.

Science Fictional 12 years, 5 months agoKay, for me it was Stranger in a Strange Land that did it first, but we all have science fiction books that made us go “HOLY FUCKSHIT” loudly and embarassingly in a public place or around relations, and/or get goosebumps. I miss that, and I’ve exhausted the library around here. Any suggestions?
-
I don’t know how you feel about short fiction, but Ted Chiang’s collection Story of Your Life and Others is amazing.
-
Oh and also? Anything by Samuel Delany. My favorite is Babel 17. (Bonus: He is super gay and has an amazing beard. The face kind, not the fake wife kind.)
-
One of the earliest stories that really made me go ‘HOLY FUCKSHIT’ was ‘The City and the Stars’, by Arthur C. Clarke. ‘The Gods Themselves’ by Asimov is another that was really important for me. I have a ton of short stories that I could recommend, but I very strongly recommend the following to everyone everywhere unless you’ve already read a…[Read more]

Tanith Lee (gender things) and Ray Bradbury (life things. was brokenhearted when I found out he doesn’t think women should read scifi)

harrison bergeron.. read it and lost my shit.
-
Oh, this is kind of a weird one, but the book Feed by M.T. Anderson really pretty much blew my mind when I was a teenager.

I say things when I KNOW I shouldn’t, but my optimism makes me think it might turn out okay.
In the hairdresser’s, in my conservative, redneck shithole of a town:
Catherine (hairdresser): Oh, this short style really suits you.
Me: Yeah, I’m glad I finally got the courage up to chop it all off, you know. It’s a big thing.
C: It’s very chic!
Old…[Read more]-
I hope/assume your ears are still intact? Also I want to start using “folicular patrons” in daily language. Haha :P
-
I’ve still got the ears. I’m glad with the way it turned out; now, when I get my ridiculous amount of piercings, they’ll be visible and not hidden under my previously biebery shag. Which made for awkward times in my small town as well.
“You look like Justin Bieber.”
“FUCK YEAH!!”
“What the hell?”

this is brilliant.

this is a fucking amazing compliment. YOU are brilliant, my good lady.

i’ve never been complimented so thoroughly on a compliment. astounded right now.

I spent an hour talking to my parents and my hairdresser explaining that there are places where getting hair cut like mine isn’t weird or unusual. without saying “lesbians”, in an effort to avoid the awkward.
DIDN’T WORK
-
if you have a short gay haircut i really recommend cutting it yourself! it’s actually super easy!
-
yeah, that was how the discussion ended. do you have any tips on that subject, btw? they’d be super helpful!
-
i keep my hair pretty short so it’s super duper easy for me. i use a set of clippers with the longest guide thingy on, the 3/4″ one, and just buzz the back and sides with that. i keep the top a little longer and parted on the left. to do that, i use the same guide thingy on the clippers. i stand my hair up (i cut it dry but my hair is super thick…[Read more]

I’ve always really wanted to cut my hair myself after I heard that Keith Richards did it. The guy is my idol. And it seems like what the cool kids do. I’m just terrified of messing up.

Hi I’m Chloe from (or rather, near) Melbourne!
-
hey, i’m also from melbourne! :)
-
I am jealous of the Melbournites :) it’s my favourite city in Aus, I am moving there when I get back from overseas next January.
-
ah good choice! where are you off to?
-
Off to Europe – backpacking and some study in Denmark :) I am really looking forward to life in Melbourne town though, I’ve wanted to live there for aaaages.
-
that sounds amazing, i might venture off to europe next year! haha i’m just a little biased but melbourne is the only city i’ve been to that i’d really want to live in (apart from san francisco). lots to look forward to!
-

-
-
yay! melbourne <3
-
-
Melbournestraddlers! Hooray!
-
Oh, that sounds awesome! Where are you doing your exchange? Hope you’re having an amazing time :)
I’ve only spent a week in Perth, but I loved it. Sun, sea, funky shops and cafes… if it wasn’t so far away from the rest of the country, I’d move there in a heartbeat.
-
Hey! I’m from melbourne too. I know it’s been ages but I’m excited about the existence of y’all.
