guys. i’m leading a meeting for my university’s gsa on feminism and the lgbt community. i’m really excited but i’m also feeling overwhelmed. anyone have any suggestions for talking points??
-
(If this isn’t too late, then good luck! If it is–well, I hope it went well!)
Maybe a quick Feminism 101 lesson–intersectionality, feminism actually means everyone’s rights not just women’s, etc?-
YAY. yes, this is a very good point. i should bring this up. ALSO, this meeting won’t happen until next spring, so i have PLENTY of time for suggestions. CAPSLOCK.

OkCupid Survivor Group 12 years agoI just activated my profile again after having it disabled for a year. I noticed that the women in my area arenʻt nearly as active as the city that Iʻm originally from. This should be interesting.

Hi! I just moved to Tennesse.
-
welcome! i moved here about 3 years ago. what part of TN are you in? how are you adapting to the south (if you’re not originally from the south)?
-
I’m in Memphis, and no adapting cause I’m originally from Arkansas. One of these days I’m going to get out of the South, but apparently not yet. Where are you in TN?
-
I’m in Knoxville. I keep telling myself I going to get out of the South too. Not from the south, don’t really want to be in the south, yet I’ve been in different parts of the south since 18 when I went to college in VA.
I don’t have fond memories of driving through Arkansas, so I assume Memphis is a step up?
-
Yeah I’d consider it a small step up. It’s definitely the most populated place I’ve ever lived in.
-
So I looked at a map because I’m terrible at geography, and then I laughed because we’re literally as far apart as two people could get and still be in TN.
-
lol. yep. it’s a good 6 hours. TN is a long state. we could be further if i lived in Johnson City, which is at the NE corner or TN.
-

-
hot damn I’m from Memphis too (going to college in Nashville) we should be friends. yay I’m not the only queer girl in town! :D
-
Score! What are you in school for?
-
I’m double majoring in psych and French. I’m actually studying abroad in France right now but it’s only for another month so I didn’t count it lol. what brings you to TN?
-
Optometry school.
Just to make me incredibly jealous, exactly how awesome is France?
-
France is fantastic, there’s an outdoor food market basically on my doorstep three times a week and pastries are the best things ever and the public transportation is cheap and can take me to the beach in an hour. I give it an 8/10 on the awesome scale, with points getting taken away for the fact that I spend most of my time sitting in my…[Read more]

Haven’t had that one yet. So far I’ve had The Barbeque Shop, Corky’s, and International (I think that’s right). So far I like Memphis but I’ve barely done anything. I feel like I spend all my time studying :(

Sooo how do you ladies deal with men who think that feminism is personally attacking them, and not the overarching patriarchal system and society?
-
I have a Master’s in Women’s Studies and I…never really figured this one out. I would just try to explain to them very quickly and generally that it’s not about criticizing individual people, but rather the systems and structures of society. After that, if they still feel personally offended and defensive, then honestly, you’re better off…[Read more]

What really pisses me off is when they openly recognize class privilege but when it comes to racism/sexism, you can get them to admit that it exists but it’s like “well yeah it exists, but youre just being sensitive. lololol :) i looovvveee women tho, im not sexist so I dont wanna worry about it”
It’s just shitty when you expect more out of them.…[Read more]-
Yeah, that is especially frustrating. I guess this is another version of what Annika called The Douchebag Purge. Now you know who the douches are, so you can know not to fully trust them or just avoid them altogether!
