My partner and I are moving to East Arkansas, not too far from Memphis. We are trying to get a feel for the community because we are leaving a wonderful group of friends and want to start building new friendships with other gay gals. We don’t mind the accent, as long as you don’t mind ours ;-) We are moving from Maui.

I am wondering has anyone here read, “The Mermaid and the Minataur” by Dorothy Dinnerstein? She is rather controversial with a basic thesis that men act threatening, women just wait them out and also encourage such testostone fed rantings preferring to defer power to men, while actually retaining power through patience. It could be summarized in…[Read more]

It’s interesting but I don’t buy it because often that testosterone fueled power turns to violence (not necessarily physical) and it’s frequently directed at those weaker. The person in power isn’t abused typically.
It’s fun to think about how women are actually the power behind the thrones as it were but it’s fantasy.

Hey that’s near me! I can’t tell you a whole lot about the gay community because I’m a recent transplant myself. There is a LGBT community center in Memphis that I know has meetings for various age groups and interests. And there are a couple gay bars.
We plan to connect with the LGBT center in Memphis as soon as we get there. We have a soft spot in our hearts for teens especially.
I will be there toward the end of February. What bars are decent?
That’s great that you guys want to get involved with the center, I know they’re always looking for volunteers.
Gay bars specifically? To be honest I’ve only been to one and wasn’t super impressed. I need to check out the other and see if it’s better. If you’re just looking for bars in general, Memphis has plenty with Beale St and all, so you can…[Read more]
Which bars are you talking about? I’ve been to Dru’s but don’t know of any others. Dru’s is nice in that it’s low-key and comfortable but not (in my opinion) really a place to go if you want to meet people. Their Thursday drag shows are awesome though.
Yeah Dru’s is the one I’ve been to. I can definitely see it being cool to go hang out with some friends, since it is low-key, but not so much for a newbie in town to meet people. The other one I was thinking of was Crossroads, which I haven’t checked out yet.
We went to Little Rock and met a lot of fun and friendly people at Trax (formerly Sidetracks). We are very impressed with the openness and friendliness of everyone. Can’t wait to go out in Memphis. We will check out Dru’s. Not too thrilled with all the smoky bars here. They haven’t allowed smoking in Hawaii bars for years now.
Thanks for in the input!
There’s also Spectrum at 616 marshall ave that is a mixed bag slanted to the younger set open thurs-sat. I’ve always enjoyed the drag shows and music.
