I started with my mom, because that’s the most important relationship in my life. I basically started with, “Jenn and I have been dating.” Then I moved on my sister and my close friends. I’ve still avoided the subject with my extended family, and I stay neutral in public domains like Facebook (even though I maintain secret Autostraddle and OKCupid accounts). I tell my friends I’ve been dating girls. I never say, “Hey, I’m gay!” because I don’t like being pigeonholed into a specific box with a specific label. As for having no lesbian/bi friends, I solved that by contacting my sister’s best friend from high school who just happens to be a lesbian, and through her support for me she has become a close friend.
