I’ve been a vegetarian all my life , mainly for environmental reasons.
I’m thinking of boycotting leather and other animal products too but not sure how easy it will be? ? -

So how about that brainstorming for gay-straight alliance activities? I just started my school’s, and we need stuff to DO.
-
I’ve been wanting to start one at my school, but I don’t know how
-
try talking to your principal and/or assistant principals about it. i don’t know how it works for other schools, but we have a REALLY active student club life over here, so it often boils down to simply filling out a few forms and finding a teacher to be the club’s advisor. oftentimes, i find it helpful to simply track down the biggest names and…[Read more]

our GSA does a lot of activites re: social activism, so perhaps i can help you out here! we’re actually visiting all of our health classes this month to talk about what it’s like to be young and queer, gay bullying, etc. etc. we visited all the social studies classes for the day of silence as well. i also highly recommend looking into LGBTQ…[Read more]

Those all sound like really good ideas that I’ll have to keep in mind for next year! We made ours this year and were just focusing on establishing its presence first before doing community outreach stuff next year.
-
in that case, i recommend school fundraisers. if you can get permission, try holding a series of miniature fundraisers- from selling baked goods to donation boxes (to the LGBTQ charity of your choice, most likely), or even do something bigger- paint a mural in your school, have an assembly to raise awareness of some GSA-related cause, so on. we…[Read more]

We had a club day, too! And a surprisingly large amount of people signed up, but the activity dwindled after the first month or two and I’m pretty sure a good 50% never showed up at all, partially out of fear, I think. Clubs at my school are allowed a maximum of three fundraisers a year, I think. One advantage we have over other clubs is that we…[Read more]

This year, we did a fundraiser for AIDS Walk, Day of Silence, Night of Noise, No Name Calling Week, sold LGBT related tshirts and had “movie nights for human rights”. We’d show two movies at school that were generally related to human rights and people would donate to the club. We’ve also done things for LGBT history month and spread awareness…[Read more]

Any raw or raw-inclined vegans out there? Question: how do you survive the winter??
-
I’ve read a tiny bit about raw veganism– someone please talk about it for me? I’m very interested.
-
basically the idea behind is that you get more nutrition out of having your fruit and veggies raw (and ideally organic). But not eating processed food e.g. canned anything, not even bread, etc. you also avoid putting toxins in your body.
The rules are no heating up food above 30 degrees. So you can’t boil dried lentils or anything like that. But…[Read more]

Baltimore / D.C. Autostraddlers! 12 years, 6 months agoCurrently stuck living in VA but I’ll be in DC this weekend, I go there about once a month to visit a friend and have fun cause it sucks where I am. Any suggestions on what to do there nighttime-wise/where to go (that might involve gay things)?
-
sadly I am out in the burbs, in williamsburg for grad school at W&M, so not very near the fun stuff. thanks for the suggestion. dunno if i will be able to convince everybody to hike out to crystal city this weekend tho, i might need to save that for another time.
-
Doesn’t W&M have like 8 million queer girls? I ask because I’ve dated 4 girls from W&M while living in NY, so I assume that school just secretes gay.
In DC, Phase is the big lesbian bar, and there is a once a month girls party at Cobalt called Bare. But I go to these only sporadically, so if there’s other stuff I am not aware of it.
-
Ha yeah there are tons, but they’re all undergrads and I’m in a grad student and have all my classes at this new building off campus with only education grad students so I never see other people at the school. i’m still working on how to meet these people…
-
Hey I currently go to WM and it’s such a small community, and the gay community is even smaller, and then the lesbian community is basically a family- 2 different fams. But it’s really easy to meet people. But even though it’s a small school….it’s pretty amazing!

Hi fellow Tribe person! (or is it Tribe member? I don’t know how people say it whoops)
-
Hahaha it’s cool, most people say twamp which means “typical william and mary person.” But Tribe member/Tribesman/Tribe (I don’t know either.)

I boycott leather as a vegan and I find it really difficult because you might see a super cute shoe and be like wow and it’s vinyl and it will have a leather sole. Happens a lot, however you do tend to save a lot of money on shoes but it’s a bummer if you’re like me and need expensive ones due to orthodics.
I also don’t buy wool as 50% of wool…[Read more]
Depends on how many animal products you’re wanting to boycott. Leather is actually pretty easy to avoid these days, as a lot of different shops both online and off offer vegan alternative to leather goods (like Alternative Outfitters or Cosmo’s Vegan Shoppe). Stuff like lanolin or gelatin are much harder to avoid, because it’s hidden in so many,…[Read more]
