Any law person in Canada? I studied both common law and civil law and I’m now trudging through my LLM masters wondering if it’s going to be worth it if I don’t want to practice… Any advice ?

I’m planning on going to law school and am interning at a law firm this summer.
-
Do you have a preference for what type of law you’d like to practice?
-
Not really. I’m going to be working at a small non-profit firm with a focus on increasing economic opportunity and this kind of law does appeal to me.
Environmental law also appeals to me because I feel like it’s a growing/evolving field that should become increasingly relevant as we grapple with issues like resource management and climate…[Read more]-
A lot of people do figure it out in law school as they intern and see what topics interest them. Particularly in this economy, people are just trying to get a job in general, let alone being real picky about what area it’s in. In a lot of areas, the market is super saturated and it can be really hard to get a job after graduation.
-
Oh, I’ve heard all about the state of the legal job market (or lack there of). I’ve got a professor who basically told our Con Law class that if we are looking for a lucrative job, don’t go to law school. I mean, do want to be financially secure, but I’m not going into law for the money, so I’m trying to not get too worried.
Since you are from…[Read more]-
I’ve heard good things about Lewis and Clark and they are known for their environmental law program. The campus is nice, at least one building looks like a bunker, but it’s right in the trees which makes it feel more secluded and like you’re in the middle of a forest, and the library is beautiful.

Spent the morning in a Trust Accounting CLE, so boring
-
Where are you going that’s still in session? Or do law schools generally run longer than undergrad?
-
In the US law school is (generally) three years. After law school when you’re practicing, you have to take CLE (continuing legal education) classes. So in Oregon every three years I have to do 45 hours worth of CLE’s to keep my license.
-
Oh! I assumed you were referring to a class in law school and I was wondering why you weren’t out for summer. I’ve never heard much about the concept of CLE. Is there a lot of variety in which classes are available for you to take to fulfill the requirement?
-
Yeah, there’s a ton of variety in the classes that are available, I’m signed up for one coming up that is about using new technology like iPads in a practice. Often you’re required to take a certain amount of certain types (like ethics and child abuse reporting), but it’s pretty open beyond that.
-
Learning how to use an ipad in practice sounds like the funnest thing ever! Glad to hear not all the classes are a total snooze fest.
