The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI just finished reading “The History of White People” by Nell Irvin Painter (I think I saw it recommended on here) and it was really interesting. I’m working on “Persistence: All Ways Butch and Femme” now and really enjoying it so far.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI love Nalo Hopkinson! She’s a scifi writer whose stories are based in Caribbean culture, which is an element I really haven’t seen incorporated into scifi before. I read her first book ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ and was really excited about it. So I went out and found another of her books, ‘Midnight Robber,’ and I just started it today. So…[Read more]

I think I need to read these all. (Assuming I can even find them here in the Antipodes :P)

If you can find them, you should definitely give them a try! Now that I’m thinking about it, I vaguely recall reading and liking another one of her books several years ago. It was called something like “The Salt Roads” or maybe just “Salt Roads” and it had time travel. So she’s got something for any scifi preference!

I read Brown Girl in the Ring! I’d forgotten it, I ‘m going to have to find some other stuff by her, because it was an AWESOME book.

I’m joining the group because I really REALLY want to move to Chicago, and knowing some awesome queers will hopefully motivate me enough to make it happen!
-
make that shit happen!!! i did!
-
how did you do it? I mean the only thing really holding me back right now is my fear of being unemployed/failing/having to move back in with my mother (yikes) and it’s a big cliff to jump off
-
well, i kind of got lucky. my friend and her new wife moved to L.A. and need someone to rent her condo. i really didn’t want to move to chicago so soon but i couldn’t pass up the deal. i still work and go to school in dekalb, well until i don’t have to anymore.

I’m not good at meeting ladies. My friends tell me I should play a sport or join a club. I embrace clichés. Hence, the following question:
What’s the good word on local ladies softball leagues? -

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI just finished reading the short story “I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream” by Harlan Ellison. I very much enjoyed it and you might too! Just as a warning, I’d heard it was incredibly unsettling, but I wasn’t really bothered until the last few paragraphs, at which point I kind of freaked. Still totally worth it though.

My parents tell me of this strange year (2 years ago? maybe?) where it only got legit warm for 2 weeks in July and then started cooling off. I almost panicked. I move to the south for 2 years and get spoiled by tulips popping out of the ground in January.
-
Yeah, that actually happened. It was not fun. Hopefully not again this year… we’ve already had those two 90 degree days, so I’m hoping that won’t be the case…
