Here’s my TABI spread with my new Deviant Moon deck though :) Based on this spread, I started offering free readings off of my tumblr site!

    1. Tell me about yourself. What is your most important characteristic?
Three of Pentacles – Working together. This deck is about cooperation and mutual support – life is a creation in progress and I need to…[Read more]

I haven’t worked with this card a lot, but in the RWS deck I had the impression that it was about picking your battles wisely and how sometimes we can fight for something that’s, in the end, not worth fighting for. Ultimately we gain something but we end up making ourselves look like huge jerkfaces in the process. So maybe a futile fight is the…[Read more]

    • “huge jerkfaces” You’re starting to sound like me doing readings, lol. Fantastic.

From the little Tarot Nova, Housewives Tarot, and Anna K Tarot.
The first time I saw the 5 of swords in the Anna K deck, I was more than a little terrified. It’s actually scarier than the 10 of Swords for me in this deck, or the Tower. The Housewives describe it…[Read more]

      • The Anna K Tarot definitely has a terrifying picture! It seems like a huge message to back the hell off/stop being a bully. But geez. And the Tarot Nova made me laugh. Are those little mice, stabbing each other? These cards are like complete opposites. One is adorable and the other is terrifying!

    • I tend to go with Alison’s RWS-related ideas. It’s a sad card, I find, but can be a brilliant warning to check yourself!
When it comes up for me in a reading, the question I ask myself first is who am I in this card? Am I the person getting hurt? Or am I someone who is taking back my power and walking away from someone who hurts me? That can be…[Read more]

So, Allison asked me about my Wildwood deck interview. I did it and took, but haven’t typed them up. I’ll do my best to make that happen soon! In the mean time, I DID type up my interview with the miniature RWS and posted it on my tumblr. So here’s that one to tide y’all over. Some interesting stuff definitely came up!

    Finally, my TABI deck…[Read more]

    • Very cool. I love that such a teeny deck is ready to tackle big, significant changes and transitions. This seems like it’ll be an amazing one to carry around for short readings.

      • I have another tiny deck now! Lol. I’ve got to do the deck interview, but I’ll post it here and on tumbler when I do.

    Hey everyone,
Sorry about the lapse in our weekly card analysis. I definitely intend to keep this going, as it seemed like it was becoming a really good resource with everyone chiming in about their interpretations of the cards. And I loved hearing about everyone’s experiences! I love it so much! I’ve just had a lot on my plate lately…

    Next…[Read more]

I’m really curious – how did you all get into tarot? For me, it was an amazing first reading – before that, I didn’t even really know what tarot was and nearly turned down that first reading – so glad I didn’t!

Would love to hear other people’s stories…

    • Someone gave me a deck as a gift. A few years later I got another one as a gift(ann druyen science tarot) and it went from there.

    • I had played around with it before in college, once or twice. But reading your column here on AS and then branching out to reading your blog convinced me to start digging into it for real.

I’ve been in a stage of transition since I graduated grad school, and I have a tendency to explore things really hardcore at times like this (last time, I made…[Read more]

    • That is a really interesting question! And I just realized… I’m not sure how I became interested in tarot. Someone bought me my first deck but I had been jabbering about how much I wanted to try it for a long time before that.

One thing that does stand out in my mind (disclaimer, a film studies reference is about to happen) is the opening to…[Read more]

    • My mother had the Morgan Greer deck when I was a child. She did tarot readings for herself, palm readings for us girls and our girlfriends when we had sleepovers and was interested in horoscope as well. Eventually she put all of it aside, but I never forgot how drawn I was to those cards and bought my first deck when I was 16.

      • Aw wow. I’m always especially intrigued by people who learned tarot (and more) from their mothers/aunts/ grandmas/other elders… my family are as straight as they come and it took me a long time to actually tell them I read tarot.

Must be such a fascinating thing to actually do with your mum! I can’t imagine. I’d love to sit down with my mum…[Read more]

        • I hope it does happen for the two of you. Unfortunately for me, my mom put her cards away before I had my own deck so it hasn’t really been passed down from her. Should I have any children, though, I know I’ll be sure to include them in it.

      • That sounds amazing! I wish I could’ve had similar experiences. You’re very lucky. My family is very strict religiously and tarot is something I definitely cannot share with them.

        • Thank you. I’m sorry tarot isn’t something you can share with your family. :(

        • That’s a shame Alison – do you love close to your family and need to keep it secret?

On that note I know plenty of Christians who balance Tarot with their faith, and a Muslim woman who doesn’t see any conflict – but it all depends how you practice your faith I guess.

I hope one day you’re able to break the secret! xx

Hey, I’m Alannah. I’m pretty quiet ’round Autostraddle but I thought I’d maybe start posting more. I’ve been reading tarot for a few years off and on but never really found it spoke to me. The old-timey images don’t really give me much, but I only recently discovered how radical tarot can be. That changed everything, and it felt like it could…[Read more]

    • LOL – that wasn’t long-winded at all! Welcome to the group! Tarot art has exploded in such a good way in recent years. It seems a lot of artists are bringing more current imagery into it, which is wonderful. I don’t have Wild Unknown, but I’ve seen it and it’s gorgeous! Been reading a lot from The Dreaming Way Tarot lately and having great luck so…[Read more]

    • Hey Alannah! I know what you mean about the older images not speaking to you – I feel the same way, though I do have a *major* soft spot for the Rider Waite Smith tarot. I really believe there’s a deck for everyone out there somewhere :)

    • I picked up a mini RWS deck because I wanted to practice with its very specific imagery since it’s what so many modern decks are based on. I also picked up the Housewives Tarot because I loved the snarky tone. There decks for everyone, definitely.

So I read tarot and anglo Saxon runes and I find it that switching between tarot types confuses me. I am have the celtic tarot(based on rider Waite ) and the science tarot developed by Ann druyen which is gorgeous BTW, but it’s not based on rider Waite. It’s an entirely novel system(still tarot, not an oracle) and I find it hard to glean anything…[Read more]

    • I’ve definitely had decks where I loved the art, but I had mega trouble actually reading the cards. Some will speak to you more than others, and I feel like it’s fine to collect decks for the art and imagery whether you actively read from them or not. Don’t really have any experience with non-tarot oracles, though.

    • With my decks it’s more that I get very different vibes from each one, so I read a little differently. I mean, I’ll be a little snarky maybe, but my tone is completely different. And I feel differently with them.

I do struggle with really connecting to the RWS itself, but I feel like it’ll get there.

I see a lot of new folks! Who wants to introduce themselves? I’d love to hear from everyone!

I’m Potter and I’ve recently became partners-in-crime with the Housewives Tarot deck; you can see my post about it below.
