just moved around six months ago from New Jersey to jefferson county, tennessee. talk about culture shock….
-
Wow. What brings you to TN?
-
that’s definitely a big culture shock! how’s jefferson co treating you? i’m next door in knox county. what brought you here from NJ?
-
parents retired, and I was just dragged along. jeff county isnt bad, but everything is just so slow paced. still not used to the accent, even though its been six months. now I’m just trying not to get the accent

I am reading Eating Animals by Johnathan Safran Foer at the moment, and I feel so sad and so alone. Others, like my friends, don’t understand my values and priorities, and this book is so haunting with its truths about suffering and all the things that are wrong with the bioindustry. Does this feel familiar? What do you do when you feel like this?…[Read more]

i have had this book for a year or so now and still haven’t read it, but i know where you’re coming from. i tried bringing it up in conversation to no avail. no one wants to hear that what they eat is bad in so many ways that you don’t have enough fingers to count them on. i’ve just learned to let it go, but do find my self spewing out info every…[Read more]

I feel like this sometimes. Here’s my advice (it has REALLY helped me a lot): 1. Listen to vegan podcasts. I recommend “Vegetarian Food for Thought” and “Our Hen House.” They are both really wonderful for different reasons, and they give me a lot of hope. VFfT has different episodes for each subject, and there are a few on what you’re talking…[Read more]

Oh, and I meant vegan and/or vegetarian for all of these tips. I just realized I typed “vegan” for everything, but I definitely meant both! lol it’s because I have a vegan blog and stuff, so I’m just so much more used to that word.
-
Thanks Cathy! Have you got any tips as to how I find out about vegan meetups in the area? (I live in Europe, so it might be different from the US.)
-
Hi! Sorry it took me so long to respond – I don’t get emails from autostraddle for some reason…
Anyway, do you have Facebook? I would start there… Also, google to see when the next Vegetarian Food Festival is in your area…. they have one in most major cities at least once a year, and you’re likely to meet members of groups you can link up…[Read more]

hi! I’m octo-lavo veggie right now, but I would really like to be more vegan-y. But I’m 15, and I can’t actually buy my own food. help?
-
well you could tag along and go grocery shopping with whoever usually does it at your house and ask get things you would like to eat. if you like making food stuffs you could look up a recipe and pick up those ingredients on said grocery trip and make the a comment like “man, i really want to cut down on my cheese/milk/eggs. oh look at these…[Read more]

Give the person who’s responsible for cooking a Isa Chandra Moskowitz-cooking book as a present this Christmas! Or, even better, buy one for yourself and start cooking! Say you have picked a new hobby and start by cooking yourself for a day a week, if you have the time of course. :)

I have primarily been eating vegan/vegetarian (50/50) for the past months now, but per 1 december, I chose to fully convert to not eating meat/fish/dairy/eggs. I had to cancel a Christmas dinner with some people I know, because now I feel officially too vegan to go back to eating meat for a day. Even eating dairy, eggs or butter (at restaurants I…[Read more]

i had the same trouble, but i vegan cooked the hell out of thanksgiving and to my wonderful surprise everyone (and by that i mean the adults, all the kids are picky eaters) loved what i made. they seriously could not believe they were eating food where the main ingredients were vegetables and not meat or any animal products. it really did open…[Read more]

Part of the deal for that dinner was “no vegetarians”. And they’re not my closest friends, so I’m alright with cancelling and not giving too many fucks. And last week, I made a gigantic vegan chocolate/coffee-cake with lemon icing for my friends, and everyone was muy impressed. It’s a harmless approach really, kill ’em with really nice food and…[Read more]

that sounds really good and yes, if you are going to kill someone, do it with nice food. they will probably thank you for your delicious maliciousness. im sure they’ll be shocked when they find out it’s vegan haha

I understand and support the choices you’ve made! :) I also totally understand your choice to not identify as a vegan. Vegans are so outnumbered in so many situations, and sometimes it can really suck. A lot of people ask me if veganism is hard, and I tell them that the food part is super easy; the only hard part is dealing with judgmental people.

finishing up my first semester of grad school. i’m in a “top 25” social work program. i’m already over all this work. i’ve been pretty successful so far (grade wise), but i have one more big paper due and i just can’t make myself do it. ugh. need motivation.
-
yeah, a hard thing about grad school is definitely the big projects/papers. especially the ones that don’t immediately go away when you finish them, like theses and stuff. i always go easy on myself, get my favorite snacks, settle in for the long haul, and then do something nice for myself when it’s all over. good luck! you got this!

This is going to sound really lame, but my student are in default. Oops. Lost my job, bad economy, blah blah blah. But, now I got into grad school and they won’t lend me more money unless I settle. Does anyone know how the hell to do that with out a job?
