TravelStraddle 12 years agoHey all looking for travel advice…
1. Anyone know what the English is like in Italy, Spain or Germany?
2.Best places in Europe that I can get by with English?
3. If you have been to a country that didn’t speak English (or another language that you are fluent in) how did you cope?Just a memo being I’m planning to stay for 3 months so I’ll kind…[Read more]

I haven’t ever been in Europe for longer than a week or so, but in case you’re interested, the Netherlands is particularly good as (in my experience, anyway!) Dutch people do tend to know English. I also went to Berlin recently and most (though not all) people did speak English, at least a little.
-
I love the Netherlands! I want to learn Dutch and live there, everyone can speak English there and in Flanders!
-
-
Any metroploitan city in Europe will be fairly easy to navigate in English. English is the default international option, so any area catering to tourists will likely have a lot of English speaking people and signs.
I’ve lived abroad several times in countries where I did not speak the language and have never had big problems getting around or…[Read more]

really good advice. thanks!

I agree with the others, you shouldn’t have a problem. One thing you should do though, is try to learn the language — when I was last travelling I found listening to pod casts was great, and easy to do while you were on trains, planes etc. The most important word you’ll need is excuse me. The German is “entschuldigung,” which takes some…[Read more]

If you want to go north, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland are essentially bilingual countries… most people you meet will be fluent and the ones who aren’t can still speak conversational English. They are kind of expensive though, especially Norway. Sweden is a little cheaper than Denmark.
Germany in the cities is fine… touristy parts of…[Read more]

Any gaymos in london?!? I need queer friends, I’m new to town, and I swear I’m not creepy.
-
me! I just moved here 3 weeks ago and need queer friends to go out with also!!
-
Are you back in london long-term then?
-
-
I move back there in a weekish, and some more queer friends would be good
-
I just moved here too (from the US), and I’m also not creepy and want friends!
-
Yeah- I’m here for at least a year – going to SOAS (I am guessing marjorie is there too, given you’re studying se asian islam!)
-
Oh wow, another SOASian! Let’s be friends!
-
I just joined AS after months of lurking just because I saw this thread, which may sound kinda creepy, but I swear I’m not either.
I’m new to London and would love to meet people too! :D I’m at LSE.
-
Awesome! Yeah – we are both at SOAS it would seem, but LSE is not far. What part of London are you living in?
-
Really nearby SOAS, actually! I spent more time there than at LSE in my first week of being in hall.
-
I AM AT LSE. I’ve lived here for 2 years now. It’s WONDERFUL.
-
If you were there last Fri afternoon, then we have met!
-
No fecking way, yeah I was! Go to the AGM this Thursday and vote for ROB for LGBT PRESIDNET.
Hangon I’ll PM you haha!-

I have this issue too. Hey, The Ghetto is opening again in January and I remember it being pretty much the best gay thing in London when I was here before I went to uni. We could have that as like a new year’s resolution :)
-
I live just outside london :D
-
I’ve just moved to London after the gayest year of my life in Leeds, and I totally need gay friends. I’ve not seen an alternative lifestyle haircut in weeks. I’m in South London

Starting my master’s in a new city/new university with new people, including new (7!) housemates. I keep bringing up my ex gf to new people because i want to come out as quickly as possible, but that means people think i’m still hung up on her and they think i’m oversharing and weird.
-
My strategy is to get to know those around me first and hear what gay terms they might throw around, as in their bashing and such. Then I approach those I feel more comfortable coming out to first (the ones that seem more gay friendly) and allow them to take the approach of telling others… I don’t think EVERYONE needs to know up front. Take your…[Read more]

Hey, anyone from Cambridge here? I’ve been living here since a month and I don’t know anyone outside of work. Also, since I’ve only just realised I’m gay, like, yesterday, I totally need to find people of the same persuasion ;).
-
I’m from Cambridge!!
-
me three. Maybe there could be actually enough people for a cambridge meetup?
-
That would be so cool. How many people are enough? So that it’s not too awkward, initally :). I’m all for it.
-
I dunnoo but really when I say I’m from Cambridge I mean really I’m moving back to London in like 3 days for Uni sooo do not count on my presence.
HOWEVER since all the lesbians are smart and awesome and Cambridge is smart and awesome and and autostraddle attracts smart and awesome I feel there should be an abundance of (smart and awesome)…[Read more] -
Oh, damn. It would make total sense if there were lots of Cambridge-Straddlers. Hope they will turn up here, because I don’t know if there’s any place in the city where they flock to IRL. Granted, we have a vegetarian/vegan place called The Rainbow Cafe here, but that seems a little to obvious ;).
-
They’re everywhere. Seriously! I would suggest sitting on the wall oustide King’s on a sunny autumn afternoon and just people watching.
There are lots of lesbians at my gym (Greens). Gay ladies everywhere! Ok maybe I’m exaggerating haha :)
The Rainbow Cafe is good though :) Also there’s a cute cafe called Indigo nearby, go there :) And also The…[Read more]-
I have seen a few lesbians while strolling through town, but always in couples. Well, probably mainly because my gaydar isn’t very well calibrated yet, especially since british girls are overall a little different from the german girls I’m used to ;).
Thanks for the tips, I might check the places out :). I actually found the Dot Cotton Club online…[Read more]

I’m from Cambridge, and my parents and all my stuff still lives there so if people were doing a meetup I would totally come, because I swear this gay women in Cambridge is a myth or something because I’ve never been able to find people
-
I used to live in Cambridgeshire but have moved to Leicestershire for university, however I’d go to a Cambridge Autostraddle meetup on the train =)
-
-
This is super late, but I just moved to the Cambridge area and kind of in the same boat as you :)
-
Damn, that is really late, I’m leaving for Germany on Wednesday. I’ll be back in October… I hope you have a good time here :).
