  • my qualifier exam is in a little less than two weeks. i know it’ll be fine. i just wish i could actually relax enough to sleep!

    • I’m sure you will do fine. I’m convinced being totally nervous/stressed out is a sign you realize you will never know enough and continue to prepare up to the last possible minute. The people I have seen who fail are the people who are over confident. I don’t know how your exam works, but before my oral defense I didn’t sleep, ate a cookie and…[Read more]

      • thanks :) i definitely agree with that saying “the more you learn the more you realize how little you know” – and that’s part of the reason i love science so much, it’s just a constant stream of learning things that have never been discovered before. it just freaks me out that i’m sleeping 3-4 hours a night now for the fifth day in a row and i…[Read more]

I think this is going to happen to me too.

    • Is there no grad student queer org? (start one?) Also, you could volunteer at a local queer org and meet people off campus that way!

    • I’ve kinda established myself as a grad student in the group and don’t hang out with the members much outside of GSA stuff (with the exception of a few – who actually are mostly other grads). As fairly knowledgeable about queer academics – which very few others in my group are b/c their isnt much of a gender/women’s/queer studies program here -…[Read more]

      • That’s neat. I feel like I’m not knowledgeable enough to be an advisor! But I can definitely be (or rather, I guess I already am) a nerdy queer in the corner :D I emailed the group and apparently they don’t have meetings or anything, just random events scattered around the year, so we’ll see how it goes.
