I don’t really think this is what this group is for, but I have a kinda funny story about my experience writing gay/bi content in my short story class at college. We wrote a lot of stories, and my characters always ended up being gay or bi. Most of the time, it wasn’t even intentional. I just wrote characters that felt relatable to me. But then, we had workshop, which is when all your classmates offer you feedback on your piece and mine had BRIEFLY mentioned that the main character (Jude) had an ex-girlfriend. So my professor took it upon himself to ask the entire class, “IS JUDE GAY? I just don’t understand what’s going on there with the whole sexuality thing. And can we all agree that Jude and Katelyn (the straight best friend) definitely fucked?” I was mortified. I wasn’t out and I didn’t mean for it to be A Thing in my story. But then I said screw it and in revisions made my story even gayer so I could bonk this straight man over the head with GAY words and say, “LOOK, this may be shocking that gay people just exist without a Gay Disclaimer every 5 seconds, but she’s GAAAAAY”. I genuinely liked this teacher, so this isn’t hate or a rant. More of like, I just think it’s funny how this man who feels self-aware and “woke” needs clarification that a female character who dated a girl is attracted to girls. Anyone else have funny experiences explaining their LGBTQ+ storylines to their cishet peers?
