Religious Experiences Shrink Part of the Brain
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=religious-experiences-shrink-part-of-brain-
In this study, Owen et al. used MRI to measure the volume of the hippocampus, a central structure of the limbic system that is involved in emotion as well as in memory formation. They evaluated the MRIs of 268 men and women aged 58 and over, who were originally recruited for the NeuroCognitive Outcomes of Depression in the Elderly study, but who…[Read more]

That’s really interesting. :| Depression itself usually shrinks the hippocampus as well. The hippocampus is primarily used in memory, I wonder if it has any noticeable and measurable effects on the highly religious? Do you think the hippocampal atrophy is a cause or effect of “deeply religious experiences”?

that’s a very good question. I’d like to know the answer too.

Omnivorous Atheist/Skeptic queer geeks 12 years, 4 months agoSo let’s focus on the Skeptic part of this group. How ridiculous are anti-vaxers like Jenny McCarthy? There are currently measles outbreaks all across the country, even here in Utah, because a few people actually are convinced that vaccines cause autism(no evidence whatsoever to support this claim). Well guess what? Measles can KILL, pertussis can…[Read more]

Man, there are few things that piss me off more than that crazy movement. I grew up in a small town full of hippies, and then moved to a bigger city full of hippies, and I swear I am constantly surrounded by these people. Even my mom buys into that crap. I’ve been reading about the measles stuff lately and it makes me SO MAD because there is just…[Read more]

That stuff pisses me off so much, people are dying because these stupid people won’t vaccinate their kids. I had someone on facebook unfriend me because I kept calling out her anti-vax (wasn’t a big loss since she’s also a fan of fox news).
-
I have an aunt and once had a teacher that were anti-vaccine. They make my blood boil. I’m pretty passionate about it just because it is so god damned stupid. Parents shouldn’t have the right to deny their children vaccines that could prevent serious outbreaks of diseases that are totally preventable.
-
There’s a website called ”Jenny McCarthy Body Count” that has numbers of how many people in countries where vaccines are widely available have died of the diseases they prevent.
It also really offends me that people would rather have their kid get something like mumps or rubella, than have a health autistic kid. It’s just SO offensive to people…[Read more]

Autostraddle Musicians 12 years, 4 months agoAny other composers here? What sorts of things are you working on right now? I’m almost finished with a piece for voice, and I really love it. I’m starting to think that maybe vocal writing is my “thing” and I should focus on that more from now on.
-
i arranged an accompanied brahms lied for piano solo, does that count?
by the way what notation program(s) do you use, do you have any recommendations? i use musescore and it’s quite fiddly, i guess nothing compares to the ease of pencil and eraser.-
I’d recommend Sibelius, its not perfect but it can do almost anything; and its pretty intuitive so it doesn’t take too long to learn.
BUT its suuuper expensive so you’d need to download it or get a cracked copy, unless you’re rich-
nah, dude. I’m all about finale. But really, it’s not that different from sibelius. They’re both great software choices. I’ve been using finale for a couple of years now, and it’s been pretty great.
-
One of my fellow comp majors said that Sibelius vs. Finale is like Mac vs. PC for composers, and I think he’s right. Anyway, I’m on Team Sibelius – I find it less confusing to use and I like the look of the scores better.

I am a big book nerd, and a bit of a movie geek. I have dabbled in D&D, I played WoW for a few years, but my first love is reading. Especially hardcore fantasy like Game of Thrones, or Malazan Book of the Fallen.
I was always super into reading when I was a kid and even a preteen but I haven’t been reading nearly as much lately and I’ve lost most of my interest in fiction. If I read now, it’s generally non-fiction.
I have a truly awesome collection of classic/golden age SF. That’s probably my primary geekishness, but I also am a big internet dork, as far as knowing way too many internet jokes, and having a possibly horrifying amount of my real life friends be weirdos I originally met on shitty message boards.
I also dig good fantasy, like Game of Thrones,…[Read more]
I’ve always wanted to be more of a gamer, but I am poor. I just play my old Pokemon games over and over on my Game Boy SP.
