Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years ago allonz-y @internrachel and @julia1 ! This week I read ‘The Late, Great Pennsylvania Station’ by Lorraine Diehl (168 pgs) and Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons (233 pgs). The LG Penn Station was good but information-light for what I was hoping. The general tone is fawning which is understandable considering the cult that has arisen around the original Penn Station in New York. And from the pictures it was a magnificent building and I’m sad they tore it down to replace it with the hideous Madison Square Garden complex. I just wish that the author had spent more time on the cost of erecting the original building because most monumental buildings come at a high cost beyond price.
I’ve read Cold Comfort Farm several times and it is just absolutely delightful. There really is no better word, the story is witty and sardonic. It pokes fun at the romantic gothic characters that populate English literature but it also seems to mock the absolutely practical main character. It was a great book to reread and if you haven’t read it do, it’s quick, funny and so enjoyable!
