Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago @internrachel (i almost wrote ubtern, stupid misplaced fingers!) and @julia1, another book down! Nature’s Museums: Victorian Science and the Architecture of Display by Carla Yanni, 199 pgs. This was a totally pleasant, quick read focusing on institutions of natural history built in the UK from 1830-1890’s with a little about modern natural history museums. The parts that most interested me were the Victorian opinions about the proper architecture for a building of natural history and the beginnings of the separation of science and religion (and the religious aspects of studying natural history!). The two best completely frivolous things I enjoyed about this book was learning that there was a man named Lyon Fairplay and the prolific use of the word ‘ferrovitreous’. I wish I could use that word everyday. But really a good book about a topic I hadn’t consciously thought about!
