Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago @internrachel @julia1. Brave New Families by Judith Stacey, 328 pgs. The book is a ethnographic/sociological look at two “working-class” postmodern families in the mid- to late 80’s in Silicon Valley. The portraits of the two families were really interesting, the focus was on the matriarchs and included their history with feminism, the influence feminism had on their relationships and children. Religion factored into both families in ways that seemed to surprise Stacey, one woman was an evangelical Christian but worked feminism into her ‘submissive’ marriage. The politics and indicators of the time (a surprising amount of PCP! it would be meth today) definitely date the study but the edition I read had a preface from 1998 and the ideas of postmodern families are completely ingrained in American society. I would recommend it!
