Genderstraddlers 11 years, 10 months agoThis sounds like another book I have to read in between nursing classes. Where did you get it,, sounds like an amazon purchase? I go to that conference to work with TFYA every year
-
Yeah, it was an amazon purchase for me- there’s also an ebook for kindle or your pc, which you can get from amazon if you’re into that kind of thing :)
-
I’m not a gadget person outside my iphone. I like the feel of a book and a hardcover is heavenly over a paperback anyday. I bought a copy for me yesterday and one for a gf in Michigan too. I’m reading Women that Run with Wolves right now its hard to get through so I am doing it in snippets before bed at night. lol I think I am waiting for some…[Read more]

Genderstraddlers 11 years, 10 months agoWho here has read, “Whipping Girl” by Julia Serano? It may be the manifesto on understanding transpeople and gender.
-
I have! I would strongly recommend anyone who hasn’t to give it a look. I recently ran a queer reading group at my University where we discussed Whipping Girl, so I’ve got Serano on the brain right now xD But seriously- she covers so much important ground and the scope of the book is so wide: media stereotypes; pathologization of trans* and queer…[Read more]

Lucy, I had a chance to meet her at the Philly Transhealth Conference two years ago and she autographed the inside cover of my copy. She is brilliant and entertaining presenter also .
-
Ooh I’m jealous! Doubt there’s much chance of her coming down my way (bonny Scotland) unfortunately. I hope the conference was insightful/interesting!

-
He just wrote a new book. It’s supposed to be ammaaaaazing
-
I’ve heard. It is definitely on my to-read list. I loved The Virgin Suicides and now Middlesex so It’s likely I’ll feel the same way about The Marriage Plot. Hopefully, anyway.
-
I loved Middlesex but I thought The Marriage Plot was meh. But you probably already know what I think about it since I wrote a review about it for this site lol.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 10 months agoI just finished reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Franzen and it was so good. Imaginative, a really sweet/funny narrator, and cleverly written and designed. It’s a bittersweet story about fathers and 9/11 and being a child in a big city.
-
hey isn’t that Jonathan Safran Foer? I loved that book! Have you read Everything is Illuminated?
-
ha yep got the name wrong!. Sorry Jonathan! I just loved the book. I haven’t read Everything is Illuminated yet, but it’s on my list.
-
-
Oh my goodness, I’m reading this right now and I’m in love with it! It’s already made me cry a few times. And Everything is Illuminated is super good – I’ve been making all my friends read it, haha. Jonathan Safran Foer is seriously talented.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 10 months agoDIRT: The Quirks, Habits, and Passions of Keeping House is a collection of essays edited by Mindy Lewis about peoples’ (mostly women’s) relationships with dirt/cleaning. Some of the essays are funny, some are more poignant, and some of them exactly describe my feelings about grime. Also, I think you are guaranteed to find at least one essay that…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoI’ve finished a lot of books this week!
I just finished ‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barbery today. This was among my prizes for coming in second in the Autostraddle summer book club and I lucked out! It was very good. A very solitary concierge in a building full of very rich people works hard to present an image of stupidity and…[Read more]
