Ok so my dad’s work friend has said she wants to come ’round for a Jewish dinner, Only problem is my Jewish mother doesn’t cook XD So dad will be doing the cooking. Any suggestions for foods to give someone a taste of Jewish cooking? Obv there’s things like latkes, matzo ball soup etc but any other ideas? I may need to import some Bamba…
OMG Bamba.. soooo good.
Hmm… Jewish cooking. You could always make cholent, which is a stew. It generally has beef, but it’s pretty easy to make vegetarian/vegan. I’d suggest, even if it’s not Kosher, to go with either meat or dairy- meat if it’s Shabbat. Jewish food also often depends on which Eastern European country your Jewish ancestors emigrated from. Or you could go with Israeli food.
I’d recommend:
1. Israeli. Falafel (you can get a mix or make it from scratch) with pita, hummus, babaganoush, Israeli salad, and some beet or carrot salads. For meat, you can make schwarma/kabobs- just cut chicken breasts into chunks and saute, grill, or bake.
2. Jewish comfort food. This is also different for everyone. Schnitzel is pretty Jewish, but it’s also very American under the name chicken cutlets. Cholent is good. Matzoh ball soup would fit here well. A brisket or a whole baked chicken are Jewish.
3. Jewish deli food. Corned beef on rye, pickles, cole slaw. You can have a cold-cut platter.
Other ideas:
stuffed cabbage
gefilte fish
Borscht (cold beet soup)
bagels (not dinner food, but they’re bagels)
chopped liver
carrot tzimmes
cucumber salad
pigs in blankets
couscous (get the Israeli kind- the pearls are bigger)
kreplach
blintzes
kugel!!!! (potato is my fav)
knishes
If you need recipes, let me know what you’re looking for, and I’ll help you out.
Shabbat Shalom!
