Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 4 months agoHey there everyone, not from Taiwan but living in Taipei. Except I don’t like Chicken Chow Mein, I’m sorry, I hope this is OK and I can still join?
-
hahaha. NOOO how can you not like chicken chow mein *boot* jk :P
-
haha, OK but, like, TOFU chow mein? I like that loads and that counts, right?
-
okay, fine, your status is restored. honestly though there are so many yummier chinese/taiwanese/hkese foods >.<

Well, thanks! And hi george, I’m from the UK :)

Hey sk! I’m also in Taipei and currently doing a month-long stint in vegetarianism. Got any good vegetarian restaurant recommendations? :)
-
oh wow, so many! I feel like Taipei is basically the best conceivable place to eat things if you are a vegetarian. hang on, I will try to come up with some kind of shortlist…
-
OK! Eating places! I’m a massive fan of the weigh-your-plate Buddhist places. You know the ones I mean? I feel like once you start noticing them, you notice that they’re literally everywhere. I don’t know where you’re based, but there’s a super extensive one in Shida, on Heping just opposite the MTC. And there’s one in the food court of Q Square,…[Read more]

Also, there are so many other places. Probably you should join the facebook group Veggie Friendly Taipei? Anastasia knows so much more than me…
-
Danke! =D
Yeah Taiwan is really friend for vegetarians because of the Buddhists! The trick is to convince family and friends to go to these restaurants with me…

Femme Straddlers 12 years, 4 months agoHi Femmes. Question, who is your still icon? Lesbian or otherwise?
Coz I would have to say mine are definitely Santana (glee) and the twins from Skins!
I think they all dress amazingly! So proud to have the femme lesbian representing in the media!-
Really interesting question! I suppose I have never thought about specific ‘femme’ icons… more queer icons on the one hand, and feminine icons on the other… like I admire Rachel Maddow, but if I could dress like anyone, I would dress like Dita von Teese (who I note was seriously involved with a woman in her twenties!).
Now that you mention…[Read more]

Probably Fit for a Femme (I don’t know her name, do people just refer to her as FFAF?)
Totally cured me of my femme angst. Plus, she introduced me to the top knot, which means that I know longer have to wash my super curly hair tangly everyday to look presentable. Awesome.
But really, she seems so confident in who she is, and every time I read a…[Read more] -
My icon is the Hogwarts Express cause I suck at cropping.
Serious answer: Shar Rednour, my friend Megan, Felicia Luna Lemus, a whole stack of Tumblr celebriqueer femme bloggers
-
The first person that comes to mind is Amber Heard. It started when I saw pictures of her in that red dress at the GLAAD awards where she officially came out. I love a vintage-inspired outfit.
-
I can’t say I have any celeb/visible femme icons that inspire me, though I’m glad to see femmes represented in the media. I do however sort of look up to my adoptive gay aunts Jackie and Deb who have been rocking their femme sides for decades and look hot even in their 50s.

Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 4 months agoFavorite queer asian movies? Mine are Saving Face and Spider Lilies :)
-
I’ve never seen any. Can I ask where you’ve seen them? Can I get them from a video store or watch them online?
-
Saving Face – http://www.movshare.net/video/drinkw9t3rd5x
Spider Lilies – http://entertainment.tipidtrip.com/all-movies/chinese-movie-spider-lilies/
I’m not sure whether they come with subtitles but Saving Face is in English with some Mandarin and Spider Lilies is in Mandarin with some scenes in Japanese :)-
you rock my socks! Thankyou *prays for subs*
-
OK I just checked the second link a little and it has wrong subtitles annoyingly everywhere… but if you have a torrent client you can find them on isohunt as well. Hope you like them :)

Saving Face is also a personal favorite of mine!!
-
isn’t it hilarious? :D i have tried showing it to friends of mine but unless they are chinese they don’t get 90% of the humor. sadly most of my friends are not chinese
-
Ha!! I recommended this film to my straight friends, they also loved it! I am half (if that’s possible) Chinese-American.
Now you have one more Chinese friend (me!) than before. ; )

oh! I love this question, I’m so happy this thread exists. There’s a Taiwanese four part film called Panda Candy (or maybe collection of four shortish films – they aren’t really connected), I think it’s available on Tudou. I really liked it.
Also, YES, Saving Face, and the start of Spider Lilies, with the green wig.
-
Also, it isn’t queer but in Suzhou River a girl dresses up as a mermaid and swims around in a mermaid tank, so can I mention that here, too?
-
Hahaha really? That’s awesome. I haven’t seen Panda Candy, will have to check that out. I also saw a Taiwanese movie called Drifting Flowers but the storylines as far as I recall were kind of fuzzy. But I watched that a few years back. Maybe I should watch it again.
-
-
Is it Candy Rain? (if my recollections are correct)
-
Oh! Yes, some quick googling reveals that your recollections are totally right, thanks! I think maybe I mashed up the title with The Panda Candy? Which is also gay and Chinese, but which I haven’t seen. But once I tried to see it, and so the name was all up in my head…
-
I don’t know either of those but I spent like, an hour trying to find streaming version of panda candy and no success :( it is HARD to find Asian films in America! (or maybe I just don’t know where to look??)
-
: D I watched Candy Rain!! It is very pretty to look at, but… the stories were kinda…strange.
-
Agreed. On the strangeness. And the pretty to look at. It was few years ago now, but I think I remember being impressed by the one with the girl and the cups of coffee and the light up bed? And least impressed by the one where everyone turned into comicbook characters in a bookshop? But idk, I think maybe I’m more tolerant of that stuff now, so…[Read more]

Haha.. what the heck was up with the 4th story? I agree, the coffee story was the best written imo. I liked the movie overall because despite the fact that all the characters felt like caricatures, there was something very open ended about it… and somehow turned out to be a more realistic depiction of love’s many forms than all the crap that…[Read more]

Fast work! And yes, I agree. I will check out Dolls, although I can’t promise such a fast turn around period. Does anyone have an opinion on Blue Gate Crossing? I keep meaning to go back and watch it all the way through, because once I started and then something happened and then I didn’t watch more than like 20 minutes.
-
I saw Blue Gate Crossing today, it’s cute and very innocent. A little slowly paced and I thought Yue-zhen was incredibly ridiculous/borderline creepystalker/what my mom would call “shen jing bing” but overall the movie made me smile. (I have too much time on my hands, apparently…either that or I’ve been overworking so frequently I can’t remember…[Read more]

Ugh she’s gorgeous! I used to do my makeup like her when I was a teenager. But I’m an egyptology geek. :)
Me too, in fact I have two small Ancient Egyptian tatts. On the back of each shoulder, I have one tatt of the ankh and one tatt of “the eye of horus”. I LOVE ancient Egypt!!! :) I liked to think I lived in those days…
Ok we are fast friends girlfriend. Haha. I have so many books on Egypt you wouldn’t even believe it! I would be an archaeologist if there was more money in it right now. I wanted to study anthropology and acheology and photography to be a national geographic photographer and work with the museum at Cairo. But maybe someday. I totally get the past…[Read more]
