Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoOkay, so I have a lot of books to talk about @internrachel @julia1!
So, first I read an advance reader’s copy of A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, 205 pages. It was a YA novel at its most mediocre, and kind of painful to finish. The plot was overused, the prose stilted, and the entire book was just sort of irritating. I did, however, have fun…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI just finished “Dress you Family in Corduroy and Denim,” a collection of David Sedaris’ essays (257 pgs). I had heard a few his essays before on TAL (Thanks Autostraddle! ), before deciding to pick up one of his books. My favourites were the stories from his childhood, and mostly came from the first half of the book. I read my mom excerpts of…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI had a bit of a spending spree in a charity shop at the weekend and so bought and read ‘All My Friends are Superheroes’ by Andrew Kaufman on Saturday. At 108 pages it is just a wee novella but an absolute joy that I got through in one sitting.
The story is that of Tom and his new wife The Perfectionist (Perf). Tom is a…[Read more]

Today I read Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki with Rande Brown translating (296 pages). Now would probably be a good time to mention that I’m disabled and since reading is one of the few things I can manage on high-pain days, this is all I did today. But it was a day well spent, because this was a fascinating autobiography.…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoJust finished the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, inspired by the movie and the new series of the BBC production coming out next month. It is spectacularly well written and it’s amusing to understand all the little nuances that the movies portray.

I just finished “Slammerkin” (384 pages), the second book in a row I’ve read by Emma Donoghue (the first being “Room”). Her prose is terrific and her themes are dark and I’m going to need to read something more lighthearted after this. “Slammerkin” tells the story of a teenage prostitute in 18th-century England for two years…[Read more] -

I just finished Whedonistas: A Celebration of the Worlds of Joss Whedon by the Women Who Love Them eds. Lynne M. Thomas and Deborah Stanish (196 pages).
Like the ‘Chicks Dig Time Lords’ collection before it, this book collects essays from female fans of Whedon’s shows on all manner of topics. There are essays about the…[Read more]-
this is going on my must-read list.

I liked it even better than the Smart Pop books on the show, although they’re really good too. If you like this one, you should check some of those out.

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI just finished Jennifer Finney Boylan’s memoir, “I’m Looking Through You” (267 p). She has a great writing style, and she uses it to tell her story about growing up as a boy who is haunted by the woman she would become.
I really enjoyed this book. There are moments where I wonder if she’s just writing about my life, and there are moments w…[Read more]

I loved High Fidelity!
I have still not read or seen High Fidelity, which I am embarrassed about. Also nice job on Palahniuk, I am honestly too scared to read him.
