Lesbrarians 12 years, 4 months agoEven though it’s from a few months ago, I recommend reading/sharing this blog entry. It’s a response by librarian Emily Lloyd to the teen suicides and the It Gets Better Project: http://shelfcheck.blogspot.com/2010/10/being-visibly-queer-friendly-please.html

Lesbrarians 12 years, 4 months agoDon’t trust the one Amazon review–this is an excellent bio of one of the big names of lesbrarianism and the mother of queer studies: http://www.amazon.com/Sex-Variant-Woman-Jeanette-Howard/dp/0786718226 (All the academia is interspersed with her torrid love affairs, so there are #feelings in abundance)

i’m an honorary jew (i even have a certificate made by a Real Live Jew) who’s toying with the idea of actually converting.
-
I’m jealous of your jew certificate (I’m not Jewish either, but I’ve wanted to be one ever since I was little).
Unfortunately for now, my mom’s super Catholic and works in a church. Anytime I bring this up she gets fixated on the idea that I should just find a nice Jewish guy to marry…so while I still live near her I’ll probably hold off on…[Read more]

Lesbrarians 12 years, 4 months agoHi all! I’d like to share some of my favorite lesbrarian bloggers:
http://lesbrary.wordpress.com/ Danika! The original! (I think she’s a member here.)
http://annajcook.blogspot.com/ Anna! Smart, compassionate, with a fine appreciate for fandom

One night, I went to Kathleen Hanna’s office to troubleshoot their WordPress blog with Kate.
We may or may not have run around the office giggling and touching everything. I may or may not have touched the original Riot Grrl cabinet.

Wow, these are great! I’ve added the first to my Google Reader and am looking forward to checking out the other links.

Lesbrarians 12 years, 4 months agoI’m in my fifth year of working in libraries! Always at the bottom of the ladder, though. Right now I’m a page in the Youth Services department of my local public library (where I basically grew up lol). I’d love to get an MLS if it didn’t seem like such a sketchy career move :/
-
it’s solid once you get into it (in my experience of seven years), and as long as you’re willing to go where the job is (i moved several states away). i also think once you have the degree it’s applicable to so many jobs and in so many types of employment (federal/local/state govt, schools, companies, law firms, hospitals, etc.). information wil…[Read more]

well i have been told i’m doomed to go to library school haha. i might look into it, once i’m over the trauma of undergrad. i know a professional magazine i saw recently had an article with some really depressing stats on recent grads’ job searches. but one of our branch libraries has also had constant turnover since october because of people…[Read more]

Just out of curiosity, what type of Jew are you? I am of the non-practicing, non-believing, but still very involved with Jewish culture and community variety. I even speak Hebrew! (…okay, no I don’t. But I could when I was a kid!) How about you?
-
Im a practising and believing Masorti jew. though there’s a great part of me that has always wanted to be frum. then there’s another part of me that always tells the frum part of me to shut up, because i would be terrible at being frum.
-
Frum people are my favourite type of people, especially the frum gay sort. you are officially my favourite person. will you marry me?
-
:(
Well I’m still making myself your unofficial bff -
This needs a like button so i can like the last comment

Reformist tradition strictly speaking but in general I’m more just culturally Jewish.

Lesbrarians 12 years, 4 months agoIf I didn’t hate university so much I’d probably get a librarian degree of some sort. As it is I’m the resident information maven in town. Also BOOOOOOOOOOOOKS ZOMG

books books books books. now see, that just SOUNDS cool.

I can’t speak for Australian university programs, but all of my papers have been very technical or experience based, and library theory is more like educational theory or business theory–we’re dealing with real people and real books, so we’re writing about how to best organize information and serve peoples’ needs. No time for postmodernism there. :D
-
practical papers, melikey, because there’s a chance the info comes in useful to somebody. hmm *ponders*

Good link, Kaye! There was a bit in the ALA book on working with LGBTQ teenagers about the pros and cons of wearing something that signifies being queer or queer allied–I’m on the fence myself. It’s a really wonderful show of solidarity, but I wonder if it could come off the same as wearing a campaign button; if we’re meant to be custodians of…[Read more]
Hmm. I guess it all comes down to the horrible question of how to let everyone know you’re there to support their information needs without making some of the patron base feel alienated.
Of course, with societal norms, making patrons feel comfortable sharing their information needs doesn’t work 100% — apparently books about sex and sexuality…[Read more]
i want to share some feelings with y’all. i feel like this is a safe place. in 2008, a teenager that i knew killed himself. i believe he was gay. i have no evidence of that other than my experience working with teens and my brief interactions with him. no one, not even his sister, who i’ve become quite close to in a mentor/teen relationship, knows…[Read more]
Missy, I’m so sorry that you lost a young patron. A parochial school that I worked with lost a particularly beloved priest to suicide, and I suspected the same reasons you did. The question of “why?” from the students (still coming years later, when I was their librarian) was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to answer.
I agree with…[Read more]
:) thanks, Rie. i’ll have to look into getting a unicorn hat for our next cosplay day. *makes plans*
…and yes, i believe that we can be ourselves without giving up who we are, especially when who we are offers a role model or a positive example to our community. i’ve had many patrons glance at the bracelet, but not comment on it. they are…[Read more]
i’m also sorry that you experienced the loss of a friend/ community member. :(
Wow, Missy, I’m sorry that your community experienced that, and it’s great that you’re making a difference in his sister’s life.
That’s a good way to look at the symbols debate, although I’m sure that a lot of people wearing religious symbols and other things may not see them as making a personal-political statement — it sounds like a great way…[Read more]
thanks, kaye. i’ve had a lot of time to consider what i would do if anyone confronted me about it. i made the decision when i officially came out to my friends and family several years ago. to quote Rosemary Kirsten’s Steerswoman’s novels (highly recommended) “if they ask, i will answer.” i’m never gonna lie about being gay again. i had enough of…[Read more]
