Does anyone have advice for revitalizing a GSA? The one at my school has fallen apart, but I’m really hoping that we’ll be able to get it together this year.

    • Bring food.

      • SECONDED. cookies and brownies are the only reason mine ever gets new members. also, talk about like tv shows with gay/lesbian/trans* themes cuz EVERYONE likes television.

    • Structure helps a lot. My girlfriend and I essentially took over the GSA at our school, and the second we started actually figuring out what we’d be doing in meetings things started to work better. We went from 4 members in 2009/10 to ~20 this past year.

    • I’m VP of my school’s GSA and my GSA has been there before. 1st for events. plan well and don’t do everything by yourself. get people involved. make sure to take part and involve the school in human rights/ anti-bullying campaigns. go look for some some throughout the year like Coming Out Day. Sites to look for these events are GLSEN and the HRC. involving school admins into helping you guys create a school wide campaign will generate a lot of presence. also, keep meetings consistent, no matter how many kids attend. If you guys have nothing to do during meetings, you guys can have activities, talk about feelings, music, watch ghey related videos/news. Be involved with Anti-Bullying Week. A big problem about the GSA is that it is composed of a bunch of outcasts so in turn they have this kind of awkward impermeable bubble. So a solution to that is that the officers must be sociable and be a person anyone can turn to. Second is good PR. It can be in the use of social media and LOTS of posters. LGBT PG-13 movies. Connect with the local GLSEN chapter, LGBT support group, or any LGBT groups in the area and find away how you can be involved and then see how your GSA can get involved. I have probably a lot more, but if you have any concerns or anything that’ll come up concerning your GSA in this upcoming school year, don’t hesitate to hit me up. So give us updates on your plans!
