Lesbrarians 12 years, 5 months agoWho has feelings about a Lesbrarian ask/tell thread? Folks post their field or area of study (if you’re a student), other folk ask them questions. I’ll start!

Hi, I’m an archivist for a UN entity I refer to as (Clap Clap) NGO. If you are American, you probably collected quarters for us at Halloween.
I’m also finishing up my MLS, where my concentration is in children and youth services.

What’s a typical day like?
-
i get up, i get dressed…oh, you mean at work! :) i divide my day between ordering books, reading professional literature, maintaining the teenspace at my particular location (i’m coordinator for all eight branches, but get to play at one), and if i have a program that evening, i get set up for it.
right now we’re getting set for summer…[Read more]

What’s a good book to start with? I’m seriously underexposed to feminism; the small glimpses I’ve had so far have served to make me furious at the world and the small town in which I live. I feel like I need to learn more. MUCH more. I need some sort of a crash course to take care of all this ignorance; it makes me sheepish.

This list one went round the tumblr-sphere and was well-recieved:
My current favorite 101 title, embarassingly enough, is Kiss My Tiara by Susan Jane Gilman. It’s titled and packaged like many of those anonymous pink 20somethings guide to life books (Who buys those?), but it’s actually a rather…[Read more]

I’d suggest something like She’s a Slut, he’s a stud by Jessica Valenti. It’s aimed at teens I think, so it’s a feminism 101. http://jessicavalenti.com/books/he%E2%80%99s-a-stud-she%E2%80%99s-a-slut/
Reading blogs would also help, I think http://www.thefbomb.org is great because it does short and sweet posts.

When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to Present by Gail Collins… Assuming you’re American. Even if you’re not, it’s still super interesting, maybe just not as relevant to you. And Claire is right, thefbomb is AWESOME. I would also try out Feministing.

These are going on my book list for this summer, when I will have time to educate myself. Thank you all sincerely!

Feminism Is For Everybody by bell hooks is a really good primer for beginners on some of the different forms feminism takes and on the intersections with sexism and other forms of oppression (racism, homophobia, classism, etc.)
Jessica Valenti’s books (Full Frontal Feminism as well as the one Claire recommended, He’s A Stud She’s A Slut) are also…[Read more]

Has any one else read Girls To the Front? It’s a great story about the rise of Bikini Kill and other all girl punk bands in the 90’s, and how they made feminism popular again among teenage girls.

I would like to recommend an interesting book that I read last year and really need to read again. It’s called “Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on sexism and the scapegoating of Femininity” and it’s an excellent examination of the world that we live in and the intricate web of gender politics that interconnects so much of it.
-
Yes! Yes I am so seriously seconding this book recommendation. I haven’t read it in in full for a while but it was the first book I ever read which really dealt with gender, trans* issues and feminism and I have a lot of affection in my heart for it for that reason. I’d also say that as I remember it the scope of the book- in particular the way…[Read more]

Thirded! An absolutely wonderful book, and so brilliant for understanding how sexism, homophobia and transphobia all link into one horrible ball of bigotry.
