Hi, I’m stationed at the South Pole until November. It is pretty damn cold here, so that means I’m stuck doing a lot of stuff inside, even if I’d rather be outside. Anybody got any suggestions to keep me from going crazy on the treadmill/spinner/erg machine?
-
This is probs a bit crazy, but I used to google map a route through somewhere I like or have visited and then note what I passed at what distance. Then on the treadmill I would watch my distance and think about where I’d be if I were on my little fantasy walk.
-
That’s an amazing idea!
-
Thanks, I am definitely going to try this!

I use three simple distraction techniques all at the same time. 1) Listen to music, of course. 2) Count right foot strikes to 100. I have found that counting also helps with pacing when I’m back to running outside. 3) If the machine is in front of a mirror, I concentrate on a point in the mirror like I’m running to it. Something about the…[Read more]

hi all! I am a beginner wanting to start training for a marathon, to eventually move into tri-athalons… any advice for someone just starting out??
-
Beginner marathoner or begginer runner?
-
beginner marathoner…. well, maybe both? I used to run a lot but it’s been awhile, so maybe some refreshers wouldn’t hurt either! :)
I’ll take any advice anyone’s willing to offer, really! :)-
Here’s what I didn’t take seriously enough:
1) shoes..Find a store dedicated to runners and get a gait analysis. More expensive doesn’t mean best for you. You want a place that has a treadmill you can try out the shoes. When you settle on a pair, buy 2 and rotate them on your runs.
2) Nutrition..Don’t blow this one off..Eat right, not light.

Seconding the other advice you’ve gotten.
Also, finding a buddy to train with can be very helpful and make the long training runs more fun.

Hey! Just got started running 8 weeks ago. Did a 5km fun run early this month, and last week did an 11km Volcanic run challenge (was hell!!) but training for my first half marathon in November. I’m also a qualified Zumba instructor. It’s strange, I was so anti sports when I was in school, now I love them. So any runners out there, please let me…[Read more]

Hi there! I don’t really know that I can give you any serious advice (my brain sort of stutter-stopped over “11km”- nicely done!) but I’ve been getting back into running lately and have fallen madly in love with Fitocracy. Essentially it’s meant to give you that sort of instant gratification kick post-work out by awarding points/ achievements/…[Read more]

ooh Volcanic run challenge does sound like hell! but also like something I want to do?
I just ran my first half marathon in March and it was a great time! I grew up playing softball but never had any endurance and when I started running about 18mo ago it was rough. Now I LOVE it.
A few things I learned:
1) keep up your training! I didn’t really…[Read more]
