Jess recommended the Zombies, Run! app over on the article side of things, and I actually downloaded it and ran today!
One of the reasons I was absolutely delighted was this Clexa fic: http://archiveofourown.org/works/4003729/chapters/8993353 I read last week, (and I abhor Zombies, so consider this a major coincidence) and the fact that I ran through an abandoned industrial quarter next to a river, including old, refurbished East German Watchtowers. At Twilight. That was so much fun, thanks!

    • I finally went to try Zombies, Run! at the gym and I can’t figure out how it’s supposed to work!? Maybe I’m being a little technologically challenged. Is it just an audio track or is there meant to be something on the screen?

I listened to the opening track where you get dropped off in a helicopter or something but then there was a few minutes of nothing? I wasn’t sure what to do and then felt awkward and turned it off.

      • Try going into the settings, there you can switch over to “on a Treadmill” or something.
The thing works by feeding you new tidbits of a story every five minutes, but you can decrease or increase that interval, too, in the settings section.
I had a spotify playlist running in the background and the Zombies, run! app will simply decrease the volume of whatever app/playlist you have going, and start talking over it, then fade back into the background and return with a new segment after five minutes (default setting).
The first time around I started the Zombies run app first and then switched over to spotify and my phone just turned it off after a while, so now I make sure to pick the playlist first and stay in the app.
So, in case you’re feeling a little technologically challenged, the exact opposite happened to me.
It’s just voiceover, by the way, no fiddling with the screen necessary during running.
P.S.:Having music run in the background really makes it feel like a movie, I had Mount Kimble’s “Made to Stray” running during the intro and felt like a rockstar!

      • Yeah, you have to change it to count steps instead of gps.
