Omnivorous Atheist/Skeptic queer geeks 11 years, 11 months agoSo Halloween is right around the corner and if you watch TV at all you are being inundated with terrible “ghost stories” and “hauntings” and all that jazz. Do you guys enjoy scary movies? Or, like me, are they lost on you because you don’t believe in the supernatural?

Omnivorous Atheist/Skeptic queer geeks 11 years, 12 months agoAtheist church. Discuss.
-
I don’t see a point. There are already many Atheist organizations that host social functions.
-
Yeah it just kinda seems unnecessary to me, but I guess I don’t really care if someone really wants it. I thought it was interesting how vehemently against it PZ was.
-
-
I don’t see the point of it either. I get why PZ was so against it though, because of the idiots who already try and act like atheism is a religion

Omnivorous Atheist/Skeptic queer geeks 12 years agoOk, coming out story time. This time I’m talking about coming out about you non-belief. As a non-believer (if you are) when did you come out to those around you? Or have you not even done that yet? Personally I find that telling people I am an atheist is more difficult than telling them I am queer. Anybody close to me knows, but co-workers and…[Read more]

Atheism is fairly new for me and has actually run pretty much parallel to me figuring out I’m gay. I was raised Southern Baptist (and home schooled). I started questioning my faith (or rather just finally admitting I had doubts) my junior year of college after taking a religion class. I’d been raised to believe creationism and to take the bible…[Read more]

Crap. Stupid itouch hitting enter when I’m not ready. Ok, con’t. Pretty much all the people who know I’m gay also know I’m an atheist. Which isn’t that many people. Mostly just my gay friends. Oh and I just came out to my sister in both ways and she was cool. Unfortunately I’m pretty sure she’s the only family member who is going to respond like that.
-
Home schooled and Southern baptist? Damn, girl. That’s rough
-
Yeah, coming out is going to be…unpleasant.

I grew up without religion, and never felt like I needed to add it in my life. I never felt like I ‘came out’, part of what I could say as an icebreaker was that I was an asexual, atheist asian.
-
I have a couple friends who grew up without religion, I cannot tell you how jealous I am.
-
Ditto.

Omnivorous Atheist/Skeptic queer geeks 12 years agoAtheist biological anthropologist vegetarian that feels ostracized by all the vegetarian hippies.
-
Cool! What group of people in particular do you study?
-
Fail, I just noticed you said biological anthropologist. I’d still love to hear more about what you study particularly though.
-
At the moment I’m analysing discrete skeletal and dental variants on a set of Bronze Age Mongolian remains.
-
Interesting. Would that be the way to determine how they lived and how good their diet was? I know basically nothing about anthropology.
-
-
-
What I’m trying to do is reconstruct their social structure and establish familial relationships.
But basically, I really like the paleo and osteology side of anthropology. I’m not so good with living people. For a long time I ‘specialised’ in dead babies.
-
Interesting!
-
-
Oh that is so cool! I almost went into Anthropology myself, before i discovered college wasn’t for me. Osteology was one of my favorite classes though. Welcome!
